Folks,

Cynthia doesn't feel comfortable leading the middle Gauley without more other people who know the river and more safety boaters, especially because of the remoteness of it. Also, the last rapid gets real creeky at low levels, and a wipe out could mean a real injury.

There really isn't water anywhere other than dam release.

We discussed going to the Hiwasee Saturday and working hard on skills and spending Sunday on the Ocoee, though the Ocoee would really be best done late in the afternoon when there are fewer people. But no one wants to do a late afternoon run on a Sunday. But the Ocoee is roadside, and easily done in chunks if people aren't ready for the whole thing.

The upshot is, we think we should declare it just a club trip as opposed to a women's trip, and see who wants to go where and what support we could get for the less experienced boaters.

So chime on in, those who would come with us this weekend, and say where you want to go.

We can try another time for a strictly women's trip.

Had something come up at work and just got home...won't make the meeting. Keep me informed of Women's trip plans.I know all of the mentioned rivers except the Upper New or Upper, Upper New?. Don't even know the shuttle for that one. I'd feel more comfortable leading or assisting to lead the Ocoee than the Gauley though with folks who are stepping up from the Nanty/Pigeon because of 2 reasons: inaccessability if something did happen on the Gauley vs. road access/rafts to assist on the Ocoee, and the last rapid on the Middle Gauley, which is pretty creeky and blind at low water. Bethany might be on to something though about just making it a club trip and getting a few more seasoned boaters involved if WVA is the choice. Just let me know! I'm just happy to go!

Sounds like a good suggestion Hanley. Couldn't we do a warm up run on the Upper New (or Upper, Upper New) on Saturday (or a couple of warm up runs) and then do the Middle Gauley on Sunday?

If we don't have a safe number of ladies participating to show us the lines can we just make it a club trip???

You asked for a suggestion? You got it! I made this same suggestion about this time last year when there was no water anywhere and it was a good one for all who participated, Middle Gauley. The Gauley has been running around 400 CFS lately, with a little spike several days ago. It's dropping a bit, but is unlikely to drop much below 300 and that's still a thoroughly enjoyable trip. It's only five miles long, but it's got plenty of fun rapids and it's moderate enough to be user friendly for the folks in this group if I correctly assess the general skill level. You will need someone (or two) along who have done the middle Gauley at low water before, but I know Cynthia Grimes is in that category, so you have at least one. Additionally, you are very likely to have the river almost entirely to yourselves, with the possible exception of a kayak clinic. Last but not least, the Gauley water is clean and cool, but not as cold as the Nantahala, keeping the Gauley gorge cool on a hot summer day and making it the place to be during the heat of midday.

Give it some consideration. It's worth thinking about, plus it's only four hours away.

         Hanley

PS: I have video footage of ducky trips at 200 CFS if you want a frame of reference.

Hi Heather,
I agree with all of your comments (especially the not wanting to drive to the Nanty--I'm kind of sick of that drive). Although a women's trip would be great, I just really want to paddle. And, I'm not ready for the Ocoee. And I need some skills.
If we had plenty of people to show us lines on something like the Lower Yough or the New I would be game for that, I think (of course, there is the whole driving thing with the Yough.......).
With all of that being said, I'm open for whatever. I would even, gasp, do some flat water paddling, or double gasp...............hike.

Megan W and I talked last night we are not sure there are enough guides for the ocoee or the new and we didn't really want to drive to Nantahala so.. I am still open to paddling something but Megan pointed out that we probably need some skill based trips this fall more than womens trips. I don't know about the yough so I am open.

Anyone have any suggestions?

So if the Pigeon doesn't run (and it's looking like it's not gonna), what do you all want to do? It looks like our options will be the Nantahala, Hiwassee, and Ocoee. And then there's the Lower Yough. Oh, and what about the New??

If no one else can take Friday off, I'll most likely save that vacation day. I'd be comfy running something like the Nanty on Friday if a few others can swing it though.

Heather, Megan, and Zina-- are you gals still in?

209 cfs: A new record low for the French Broad -- not just for the day, but for FOREVER New

That's right.

In the past few weeks it's often been the lowest level for "that day" (in 112 years of records), but today it hit the lowest ever for any day, any month, any year all the way back to Oct. 7th, 1890 when they started keeping track.

It is a bit tricksie to get to, but you can find a table with the lowest levels recorded for any day of the month from here.

One year had a September 15th with 215 cfs as the lowest ever, but today's 209 cfs is now THE record low of all time.

I could be wrong, but I looked it over good and that's what I found. Can't link to the table directly.

Un-friggin-believable --- more water in the Green at release than in the French Broad right now.

Drainage-wise, Section IX they say drains 1368 sq. miles, and maybe that's from Hot Springs up, so call upstream of the FB at Asheville around half of that (that's roughly what it looks like on the map -- real rough), and you've got 600-700 square miles all told only delivering 209 cfs.

Yes, the women's trip is still on -- right now, all we have confirmed is the Pigeon on Saturday, but please put out vibes for some rain, so maybe we can head over to the French Broad for Sunday.
Right now we seem to have Cynthia G., Bethany, Meagan W., Heather, Megan M.? Maybe some more will jump in as the date gets closer.

I'll send an email around for discussing little details.

Hey! What are you saying about my grass? I'll cut it eventually! ;)

I just emailed a friend of mine who is a traveling nurse and a boater. Last I talked to him he had a contract in Kingsport, TN. He lives in Asheville and was traveling up there to work a three day shift, then coming home. He may be the mule we're looking for.

You know, actually, I was thinking about this and if you were to take the back way (there are several different routes but they all pretty much involve getting off I-75 at London or Corbin and heading East through the mountains, emerging at Gate City, VA and heading South on I-26 through Erwin and then Asheville) then it is on your way. Of course, it's about the same time as taking the interstate route to Erwin. Then again, traveling from Erwin to the Pigeon is about the same as making a round trip to Asheville, so I'm not sure if we're actually saving you any significant driving time here.

Anyway, we'll see what Chris says (my nurse friend) and take it from there.

You da' man, Hanley. Or if someone was traveling from Erwin to Knoxville--that might work.

I'll mow your grass for you if you work this out for me.

Thanks!

I may be able to find someone traveling from Erwin to Asheville that could drop it off at my friend Hadley's house for you. That's a short drive from the Pigeon. Let me make a couple of phone calls and see what I can work out.

As far as I know it's a go, Cynthia. I haven't spoken with Zina lately, but Heather and I are definitely in and I think Megan is as well. I'm still game for whatever the group wants to do. There is a large contingent that, I believe, may meet us for a Pigeon day-trip run on Saturday.

I'm planning on taking Friday off in order to start the festivities a little early. I'm hoping to somehow get my new boat before the trip. I was going to pick it up this weekend, but they don't have it yet (I ordered it from Rushing water outfitters on the Noli'). They think they'll have it on Wednesday. Unfortunately, Erwin is not really on the way..........to anything............, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do about this yet.

Looking forward to it!
