How a great day boating can turn bad QUICK.... Trip Report for the Little River 11/21/2009

The trip Saturday on the Little was great for a while.

Total there were nine of us, great crew, and a few who had never ran the little. The day started out great, the little was running about 600cfs and the skies were filled with sunshine. We put on the river and everything was great until we got to the sinks.

Everyone ran the sinks, and I decided to run the main line instead of the chute on river right. BIG MISTAKE for me. Although we had scouted the rapid before running it, and the drop look clean. Something happened when I went I went off the drop. I didb't get a good boof stroke and ended up more or less penciling in. The moment I hit the boil at the bottom I pittoned HARD. Hard enough to jar me harder than I've ever been hit before. The boat was also pinned on whatever I had hit under the water. Water was falling on my back from above and I knew that there was another boat could come at anytime. I knew I was in trouble. I struggled for a few seconds shifting my hips and felt the boat release after what seemed like an eternity. At this point I managed to brace up and my ankle was very sore. Bystanders and others from the group all started to come over and make sure I was ok. Damn, I sure was glad I had took the time to build the super bulkhead foam for my nomad now!!

Aside from feeling like I was about to throw up, my right ankle was in quite a bit of pain. Not sure if I broke it, I was able to stand on it without much pain. The front of my almost new nomad is caved in and bent up pretty good. Dot had some Bayer that I took (thanks Dot) and I decided to finish the run. Thankfully rest of the run was uneventful down to elbow where we took off the river.

After taking off the river my ankle continues to hurt. I drive home and when I get back now my ankle is swollen to about three times the normal size. Not sure but if it continues to swell, I may go have it X-rayed. It only really hurts when I try to walk up or down steps.

To add insult to injury, as we get back home, we cross the clay's ferry bridge and I can see my exit which is the athens exit (104, I think) off of I-75N. Overall round trip to the Little is around 400 miles. We were going the speed limit and heard a loud pop on the roof prompting me to pull over immediately. Upon getting out of the car, I notice that the paddles have came off the brand new Yakima MultiMount, which is a product Yakima sells to carry paddles on your rack system. Nothing was broke, just the system had FAILED and launched 3 paddles into I-75N!!! The rubber strap the product came with had FAILED and slipped out somehow. Did I mention the MultiMount was BRAND NEW and less than a month old. Dallas, myself and Dot hurried to run down the interstate trying to find the paddles. My paddle (5 month old AT2) was hit by an 18 wheeler and destroyed immediately broken to bits. Dallas had a Werner (1 YR) that was cracked on one side of the shaft but still in one piece, and somehow thankfully Dot's paddle was fine on the side of the median.

This was a brand new multimount that was replaced by Yakima due to my last Multimount breaking while at the Gauley this past season, which aslso resulted in a broken paddle!! Now while I do like Yakima, BE WARNED that if you have Yakima MultiMount I would suggest ditching this POS and going with another solution before this happens to you. I've learned my lesson and plan to give Yakima a piece of my mind on Monday. Here is a link to the description and pictures of the Yakima Multimount.
http://www.yakima.com/Product.aspx?Number=8004034

Overall, thankfully I was not hurt worse than a possible ankle injury. Possible broken boat from the Sinks, and paddles that were wrecked by Yakima failure and the 18 wheeler. The situation at Sinks was one I will not soon forget. Although the events could have always turned out worse.

Take caution when running the main like at The Sinks on the Little. Time will heal.

Take care out there,
Will

This was lots of fun. We managed to hook up with a shuttle last minute and even find some guides!

What a fun run. The waves at Fayette Station rapid were the biggest I have ever seen. There were some killer playspots, the weather was warm and the rapids were big fun. I didn't think this was much more difficult than the Lower Gauley.

Here are some pics:

http://picasaweb.google.com/home

I wouldn't mind going back this week if nothing better happens. We will need to take 2 vehicles probably!

If a low water Russel Fork trip is happening, I would love to go.

cya,

Gotta agree Matt. The New is an amazing place at these water levels (jumping around between 8 and 9 thousand. Punchy, with lots of awesome surfing opportunities, wide open, big, just awesome to run.

There are a few big holes you really need to watch out for, but just a few and if you have any familiarity with the river at all they're pretty easy to stay away from.

             Y'all have fun now.

Most people squirt the New when it's fairly low. Actually, there's a four-wheel road that comes most of the way in to the Halls of Karma below Lower Keeney and lots of squirt boaters drive in and congregate there in the summer when it's below zero.

Zero to negative one foot is probably pretty good for general squirting, especially for someone like you or I who's out of practice. As far as scratching your boat up goes, well, it's the New. You can get down the whole river without touching a rock at those levels, but you do have to know something about where those rocks are.

There was a Mirage standing in the back of Rock Creek at the Ocoee store last time I was there. Somewhere I have a slide of my old buddy Eric Gilbert doing a perfect boof in one at Sock em Dog. I think it would be a great modern race boat for some runs. Definitely faster than my Dancer. Hanley, what would be the perfect water flow range for a squirt boat trip to the NRG? Don't want any scratches and want to live through the experience... I'm way out of squirt practice ... just thinkin an old school squirt trip somewhere would be fun too.

My transportation issues are finally solved and I don't have anything else that I'm going to let interfer, so Allen and I are heading for BSF Saturday if anyone wants to join us. The Confluence to Leatherwood Ford. Right now the plan is to meet at Leatherwood around 10 am. Call or E-mail me or Allen if you want to go.

Yeh. It's about damn time. I haven't been in a boat since the Crab Orchard trip.

We had a blast. Lots of hiking...level was 250, and I would still do it again.

Thanks for taking me.

My thanks to the folks who ran the Rockcastle with me last Saturday. The trip to the Little fell through but that didn't the diminish the fun on the Rockcastle at all. It was all fun. I grew up in Somerset and it is really nice to meet some folks from there. Thanks to everybody for a great time and I hope you enjoy the pics. I have more but left out the ones where the paddles are in your face.

This weekend: The LITTLE and no excuses this time.
