I will be handling the silent auction again and it would be a great help if those of you collecting donations would have everything shipped to my house. I can then catalogue each item and create a bid sheet for it as I receive them. If you do not have my address email either me or Brandon and one of us will get you the necessary shipping information.

Thanks,

First of all I want to thank everyone for the great turnout last week! I saw lots of students, lots of instructors, and lots of other folks just practicing. It was especially cool to see all the kids!

I'm hoping to see another great turnout tonight! Remember there's a good reason for about 90% of us to be there - there's always room for improvement and it's the single best thing you can do to become a safer boater. If you think your roll is pretty solid on both sides, try some of the drills I mentioned last week to raise the challenge bar. Practice the missed roll drill, get someone to test your bracing on both sides with surprise flip attempts, practice your breath holding, or help someone else learn to roll ... even if you're just spotting them or telling them to keep their head down ;)

For you newbs: your pre-session homework is to watch a good roll video, or internet teaching videos, if you can. A positive visualization of the goal always helps. Also, please make sure your boat (or your newby friend's boat) fits well. Nothing sabotages a roll faster than a poor fit. You should be locked in the boat, rock solid with a tight fit in the hips, and a solid connection at the knees and feet. If the boat is too big for a solid fit, same problem. The boat should literally be an extension of your lower body. Foot placement should be adjusted so that minimal effort is required to keep the knees tight against the deck. If it's a new / borrowed boat, then foam, duct tape, and a towel (if needed to dry) are needed to dial in the fit. This is much easier to do at home in your warm dry living room if possible. Some newer boats have expandable hip pads that you add layers of foam to and velcro / strap in ... making this adjustment very easy. Last week we had a student with Jackson foot bags that she couldn't reach. These bags can be augmented toward you by stuffing the bow with foam in front of the air chamber of the bag. What you don't want to do with those foot bags is blow up the chamber with beads to add reach. The bead chamber is supposed to have the air sucked out and vacuum fit your foot profile ... or do like I do and start with it flat and gradually work your feet into it over time.

Hope to see you there!

It appeared to me that they have more boating related gear than in the previous 10 years or so. AND there was actually a whitewater boat in the store again! The line from Tubbo says that as long as people will be shopping they may increase what they offer including boats. They have boaters on staff too. Regardless I just wanted to let peeps know there is some gear in Lex again and if you are a club member you automatically get 10% off.

Looks better than I was expecting, so what's the problem....

Parking problem solved, we can park anywhere... at any drop... talk about park-n-play.
Raft's can put in where they use to, and quit taking up the only eddy.
Nature just hardened the river right roadbed, which always was a threat to wash away at high water.
No more out of control death-wish Peterbilts.
What a user friendly, fat-arse tourist drawing - nature-walk/hiking-trail.
Just what trout-unlimited been wanting - more trout habitat.... where are they - when you really need'em.
Virtually eliminated the only challenge to keeping Nanty boaters off the river, so there's no reason for them to continue north on Hwy64.
Which also should lessen the overuse on the Nantahala, so it might just become pleasurable again.
Finally something natural in the Ocoee river bed.
Plus right there is another Slalom course -one just laying there, one that would be cheaper to make - than to remove.
Or better yet - a rodeo hole that'd blow the socks off anything in Charlotte - and be practically free to make, and use.

Looks like the answer to many a prayer.

As level on the Dries goes, remember that it fluctuates much more dynamically than most rivers. Think about it this way.

Your average river has a kind of base level that is tied to the health of the water table. When the river gets a lot of rain and is far away from this base level it is usually rising or dropping quickly. As it drops and gets closer to that base level, the curve flattens out and it drops slower.

Since the Dries only runs when the New is already running 10K CFS, it is always in the steep part of the curve. It is usually either rising quickly or dropping quickly. The New may stabilize at relatively high water levels, in a relative way, when there is a lot of rain over several days, but it's still going to be jumping around a lot in those high levels. Example: New river is running 2 feet (4, 600 CFS) and a big rain event shoots it up to 10 feet (35,000 CFS), then additional rain keeps it between 6 and 8 feet for the next three days (about 13,000 to 20,000 CFS). From the New River's perspective, the water has been running consistently high, well over five feet.

From the Dries perspective, the river shot from bone dry to 25,000, then dropped to 3,000 rapidly, then jumped around between 3,000 and 17,000 for a few days before dropping to 0 CFS again.

Thus, whenever doing the Dries there is some difficulty predicting what you will actually be running on in terms of level. Basically, you just gotta go and catch it while you can.

Surf is fantastic down there. Do watch out for the monster hole at the bottom of mile long rapid.

Glad you guys had a good time. Hopefully I can go with you next time.

Work Begins On Emergency Clean-up of U.S. 64 Rockslide

U.S. 64 Expected to Remain Closed for at Least Eight Weeks

NASHVILLE – Work is now underway to remove a major rockslide along U.S. Highway 64 in Polk County, Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Transportation has awarded a $2.1 million emergency repair contract to Sevierville, Tennessee based Charles Blalock and Sons, Inc. The rockslide buried portions of U.S. Highway 64 at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 closing the major east-west corridor through Southeast Tennessee just east of Chattanooga. TDOT originally estimated at least three weeks for clean-up, but after a closer look at the slide area the removal process will likely take at least eight weeks.

“We know the closure of this roadway is a major inconvenience to the many motorists who travel U.S. 64 between Cleveland and Ducktown each day,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “We appreciate your patience while the work is completed. TDOT will work very closely with the contractor and the community to get this roadway back open as soon as possible.”

Before any material can be removed from the site crews with Charles Blalock & Sons, Inc. will first work to stabilize the slope. Workers will immediately begin scaling and trimming the rock along the face of the mountain. Crews will remove unstable material from the top of the mountainside and will drive large 40’ long rock anchors to help secure other material along the slope. Once the rock along the face of the mountainside has been stabilized, crews will begin removing the large boulders and other slide material located at the bottom of the mountain. After all slide material has been removed, the contractor will repair the damaged roadbed on U.S. 64 and TDOT crews will repave the roadway and reopen it to traffic.

“We estimate that some 30,000 cubic yards of rock and other debris will need to be removed from the site, which is approximately 3,000 dump truckloads of material,” said TDOT Chief Engineer Paul Degges. “This is dangerous work that requires a highly skilled contractor. Our geotechnical engineers will be working closely with Blalock throughout the project to ensure the slide removal is completed safely and as quickly as possible.”

TDOT has created a special web page for the U.S. 64 rockslide (http://bit.ly/1Tlc8m). The site currently includes news releases, photos and a map of the slide detour. In the coming days TDOT will be adding daily progress updates, updated photos, periodical video updates and a live time-lapse camera of work at the site. Due to the dangerous and unpredictable nature of the work, once the removal process is underway no one will be allowed on the work site without a TDOT escort. Media wishing to gain access to the site must contact TDOT Region 2 Community Relations Officer Jennifer Flynn at (423)-510-1164 or Jennifer.Flynn@tn.gov.

Information on the slide is available to travelers by dialing 511 from any land line or cell phone. Updates will also be provided on TDOT’s Chattanooga area Twitter page www.twitter.com/Chattanooga511 and on TDOT’s statewide Twitter site . Motorists should always use motorist information tools responsibly and refrain from texting, tweeting or using a mobile phone while operating a vehicle. TDOT advises drivers to “Know before you go!” by checking traffic conditions before leaving for your destination.

Thanks to our fearless leader and boating club prez, Jbob and I decided to head out early (630am) on Saturday morning to meet up with some ACE pros to surf WV.

The Dries was awesome.

Some things to share...

We headed out of town when the AW gauge was reading "H2". I think we would of been better getting there a day earlier for the best surf. The surf was awesome whilst we were there. But if you want the You Tube worthy big haystack wave that is right by the bridge, get there before the gauges say to.

There were still TWO Wavesport vans that were probably filled with wavesport pros that were there all day. Even accounting for my Kansas standards; it was still pretty awesome. It is also pretty safe to bet you can get your shuttle run by hitchhiking or begging fairly easy. This can be a one car destination.

The Dries run was fun too. Really big waves and deep pockets of surfy goodness that were mostly catch on the fly. Too many to count them all. No real hazards other than some pour-overs that you would want to be aware of. I think there is a real deathy place on the last rapid too, but the New River Dries is so wide, there is plenty of room to move around. It is nice and deep too. Not so sure about the water quality, but it didn't smell and I didn't see any poop. It wasn't frigid either.

The water was really neat. If you haven't gotten to get on seriously big CFS it is really strange and a little unnerving. Eddies make waves and holes make eddies. Eddy lines are feet wide with confused swirly currents. Waves are so big you cannot see downstream except when cresting one of these monsters. Getting stuck in a pourover would really suck.

On Monday we were able to meet up with an bakery electrician we picked up on the side of the river the day before.(I love that about this sport, makes conversations with my grandmother more interesting!). We were able to set shuttle and run the Lower Gauley @ 1800. It was a nice level, different than release with smaller but stickier surf holes that are great for practicing retentive moves. I got a few blunts and ends. Diagonal ledges was great and empty. It was a nice level and the paddle out was not much harder than usual. It also seemed like the big rapids had lost some of their push, making this a nice level for a Gauley newbie. PSH was super easy as purgatory hole was about half its length making that fairy not so hairy.

I also learned some things for the next trip. Ken (our trip leader) said to watch the weather in Ashville, NC for a good indication of weather the Dries would run as that is the headwaters for the New. It would give you a 4-5 day lead out time to make WV plans. It also seems safe to assume that if the Gauley is releasing one day it will most likely release the next.

let's do it again!

Oh yeah, the engineering disaster that caused the lock to be in the middle of the river, was that they didn't protect the flanks of the dam one year, and a flood scoured a new channel to one side of the lock.
If you (or follow on projects) get to the point of looking at the users, and determine time between the features, time the average person stays at each feature (or blows by it if too crowded or out of space to queue up), and the max rate of users/hour before the whole thing breaks down - would be a nice subproject to set up a simulation using queing theory to see where bottlenecks develop when you start randomizing the start time of users, but keeping the users/hour constant, then what happens as you vary the rate to approach what you think you max is. Assign some kind of satisfaction rating to each run, based a lot on how long you stay in queues, how many features you have to blow by.

Hey all, thanks for the input so far!

We have a meeting with the Kentucky River Authority, so we should know alot more about the feasibility of the project as a whole after that.

Justin - good call on the rectangular gate. We had planned on having a rectangular opening in all scenario's except for the split sluice. We were concerned about a typical sluice gate because of the need for a large super-structure above the channel to raise and lower it. Aesthetically that isn't the most appealing option.

Don - The inlet to the park would be upstream of the current lock and dam that is there. We wouldn't be dealing with it at all. In the plans made by Leachman, there is a walkway from the beach (where the paddlers exit the course) back to a put in that would be well below the inlet gate. We hope to make the gate man-powered, so we can keep the cost down as well as not have to worry about electronics failing. We plan to analyze the stresses at flood stage, although, the entire park would sit on a flood plane, so the park would be closed at this point. We have not done an analysis on the amount of users able to be on the course at one time, however, we are taking into account all the USGS water data to determine how far down to make the channel to ensure that flow would be there for most of the year. Paddlers are going to want to use the park most during the dryer months, so thats what we're designing it for.
