Salt River whitewater?

AW says its 1 fpm in gradient but somebody today told me there was whitewater on it. I have never heard anyone speak of paddling any section of it so. I know there is Taylorsville lake on one prong of it and have heard of a low head dam from a fire department local at rescue training last year.

I would surely appreciate anybodys input who has paddled it before.

Jason,
I think "someone" was not too accurate. . . . .

I've been seeking new streams to boat in our "area" and even have looked at upstream sections of the Ky River ! For about 23 years, we've been able to identify, plan, and boat whatever we deemed "good". Uncovering Benson, Glenns, Stony, Upper Bensons, Otters, Muddy, Tates, Silver at least have been pioneered or publicized via BWA or related boaters. What a blast was had be all smiling smiley

The Salt has no whitewater that I had ever found. . . . . . . . . . .

Let us know if you find differently,
Mike

In the upper reaches in Boyle and Mercer, there may be some class II. The channel is rocky, narrow and littered with fences. The salt starts on my friend's property near Parksville. No drops just small ledges and tons of Geodes. There is a section of Mock's creek (boyle) that would be fun, several 5 ft ledges and a zoom flume under SR33 just to go down a broken boulder/shelf rapid. The Rolling Fork in Boyle is a hoot when the water is up, ellegidly a very good playspot. There is also carpenter creek falls in the upper reaches, much like the madco bedrock runs only the water quality should be better and the setting is very nice. I'd say some runs around the dam of Lake Cumberland would be nice with the water down (if it still is). I wouldn't try 76 falls right now though!

Good luck!
Dustin

Jason:

In addition to the pioneering runs on the streams Mike just mentioned, BWA'ers have also pioneered steep creeks in the area since the early 90's including Joett, Calloway, Shanty Hill and trib, Cedar Branch, Marble, to name a few. The best whitewater in central Kentucky seems to mostly flow into the Kentucky River that carves it's way through a Limestone Plateau from an ancient sea. I don't know anything about the Salt however. Let us know if you find out something cool over there.

I was pretty sure that the person I was talking to didnt know that much about Ky streams (they are from NM) so I was taking it all with a grain of ... nah too easy.

Dustin we have hit a few of those cumberland creeks but nothing too exciting to report. Mostly elkhornish stuff with the end of the run having drops going off into silt. The lake was raised 5 feet in Feb but they dropped it super fast so I am assuming something didnt look right or they were testing the grout curtain.

Thanks yall.

Jason
