On October 10th, several guests fell out of a raft above Shipwreck Rock on West Virginia 's Gauley River . One person was pulled back in immediately; a second one swam aggressively to the right and washed around. Angela Dooley drifted downstream, washed underneath the rock, and became trapped under water.
This was the first commercial fatality on the Upper Gauley River . Her body was recovered after a lengthy effort by the Park Service, outfitters, and local rescue squads.
