Accident Description

I currently have a search on for a guy who was picniking with family next to Lunch Counter Rapid on the Snake. 10yo son crossed into the eddyline and called for help. Father went in after and go the boy back into the eddy but got pulled out and down himself. No PFDs. Searching for the dead is a great excuse to boat a lot, but sad for families and those left behind. Paper misreported everything so people are cancelling trips left and right with outfitters. Also said that SAR didn't show up until day 2.

Man missing in river

By Cara Rank,

Jackson, Hole, Wyo. July 27, 2010 Rescuers on Monday were trying to recover the body of a 46-year-old Georgia man presumed dead after being swept down the Snake River on Saturday. On Sunday, Lincoln County volunteers launched a rescue effort to find Joel Fegarido, of Newnan, Ga., after he fell into the water near the Lunch Counter rapid in the Snake River Canyon, Lincoln County Sheriff Shane Johnson said Monday.

Witnesses reported Fegarido, who was not wearing a life jacket, had been helping his son, who appeared to be in trouble in the water, Johnson said. Fegarido was then swept downstream himself after helping the boy, thought to be in his early teens, Johnson said. “Several unknown persons in private boats had attempted to follow Fegarido downstream in an effort to rescue him but were unable to catch him before he disappeared under the water,” Johnson said.

Because the incident happened just before 7 p.m. Saturday, Star Valley Search and Rescue responded Sunday. Rescuers used swift-water rescue equipment and Teton County’s contract helicopter to search for Fegarido. Efforts to locate the man were unsuccessful, and the search has been scaled back to a recovery effort. Johnson said he didn’t know whether Fegarido was on a commercial or private raft trip. He was with friends and family, Johnson said. “My understanding is that they were stopped and maybe swimming or getting in the water at some point,” Johnson said.
