Accident Description

The Oconee River was running extremely high on September 17, 2004, following Hurricane Ivan. Alicia Stramiello, 20, a student at the University of Georgia, was running the river in a raft with friends when it flipped at a pipe which stretches across the river. One rafter reached shore and called authorities; the other three were stuck on a debris pile in midriver. A witness saw Ms. Stramiello disappearing under the water. Her body was found two days later, still trapped under the pipeline.
