| Detailed Description: | A 39 year old man and his son were attempting to land a sixteen foot bass boat above a cofferdam on the White River in February of 1983 when their engine died, leaving them at the mercy of the current. Efforts to restart the engine and to substitute a lightweight trolling motor failed, and the boat became wedged in the rocks. A cofferdam, apparently, is very much like a ledge formed by a pile of rocks; there is no dangerous reversal. However, the boat’s two occupants were trapped in a boat. Rescue squads were called; a diver attempting to reach the boat became pinned against the rocks. A National Guard helicopter was called, and a diver was lowered to the victims in a safety net. The two were helped into the net, then brought to shore. It appears that the rescue took several hours to accomplish as the “chopper” was not immediately available. | Conclusions: | COMMENTS: Several people die each year because their powerboat’s motors fail above a dam. At about the same time a crew coach was swept to her death over the Fairmont Dam near the Art Museum in downtown
