Detailed Description:

A Pinning on Chattooga Section IV, below Raven Chute Rapid

The party was used to a lower water level. A paddler caught an eddy above the next drop. He unexpectedly washed out of the back of the eddy and found himself drawn under a rock at the back end where there is usually no water. He held on to the rock while he boat was pulled under it and completely submerged. Fortunately, the other paddlers recognized he was in trouble, and two were out of their boats and on the scene to assist almost immediately. Those who were already downstream arrived soon after with rescue gear.

This event illustrated several good safety practices:

  1. The victim did not panic.
  2. The other paddlers recognized the danger and reacted immediately.
  3. Everyone in the group took an active role in the rescue.
