September/ October Cresta Releases Canceled on Feather (CA)
Posted: 09/19/2006
By: Dave Steindorf
The USFS upon the recommendation of their amphibian biologist has canceled the two remaining
Saturday Cresta releases for September and October of the 2006 season. The Sunday releases on Rock
Creek will occur as usual. AW will continue to work with the USFS and the other members of
the Rock Creek/ Cresta Ecological Resources Committee to develop better studies to determine what
impacts, if any, are occurring to tadpoles during the recreational releases. We will also be
working to find solutions to change the flows in terms of magnitude, duration and or timing in
order to reduce any potential impacts to tadpoles that are identified from these
studies. AW will also to continue to insist that all parties live up to the agreement
to restore whitewater recreation opportunities negotiated by AW on the Feather. We continue
to point out to our ERC partners that any impacts on the Feather River are due to the artificially
low flows imposed by PG&E’s hydro-projects and massive flow fluctuations that occur in
the spring. The summer whitewater releases are the only days in the summer when the North
Fork Feather River flows as its natural base flow. We are confident that we will continue to
work with the USFS, PG&E and our other partners on the Feather to find ways to reduce the
impacts from hydro operations that will allow us to have frogs, fish, and whitewater. AW
would like to thank those of you who sent letters, emails, or made phone calls to let them know how
