Upper Yough Season opens May 3rd

The first Saturday release on Maryland's busy Upper Youghiogheny River is on May 3, the same weekend as the nearby Cheat River Festival. Depending on water levels this could be a very busy day on the river. Since the takeout town of Friendsville, Maryland doubles its population on busy release weekends paddlers need to do all they can to minimize their impact. Please park respectfully on Maple Avenue and don't block traffic. Don't park along the riverfront (Morris Avenue or Water Street) unless you have an invitation from a property owner or are patronizing a business. Remember that public drinking and nudity are offensive to local residents and use the change areas provided. If you wouldn't do it in your mother's front yard you shouldn't do it here.

American Whitewater will maintain the put-in facility in Sang Run for the 11th consecutive year, and we encourage paddlers to make a donation towards upkeep expenses. We suggest a donation of $2 per visit or $20 for the season.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Jess Whittemore the boater parking lot will go out for bid in a few weeks. We expect construction to begin soon thereafter. Whitewater paddlers donated over $25,000 towards its construction, and their generosity attracted almost $200,000 in additional funding. American Whitewater is proud of its partnership with the Town of Friendsville and looks forward to the opening of this facility in the coming months.
