The National Park Service is celebrating its Centennial this year (2016) and the Wild and Scenic
Rivers Act’s 50th anniversary is coming up in 2018. We encourage the paddling community to
get out there, take photos, and enjoy rivers while finding your park! You can help tell the story
of these rivers which supports their conservation and stewardship by sharing your photos.
The National Park Service has initiated an effort to capture the beauty of each of the 3,200
river segments listed on the Nationwide Rivers Inventory and populate an interactive
map with photos.
The Nationwide Rivers Inventory is a listing of free-flowing river segments in the United States
that are believed to possess one or more “outstandingly remarkable” natural or
cultural values judged to be of more than local or regional significance. Under a 1979
Presidential Directive, and related Council on Environmental Quality procedures, all federal
agencies must seek to avoid or mitigate actions that would adversely affect one or more segments
in Nationwide Rivers Inventory. For those who enjoy recreational opportunities on rivers, this
list of rivers represents our nation’s most spectacular free-flowing rivers and many our
community is out enjoying on a weekly basis. Because of this, we can play a unique role in
assisting the National Park Service in providing imagery that captures the beauty and inspires
stewardship of these special places.
