2016 Summer Releases Mokelumne River - Electra to Middle Bar (CA)

In the settlement negotiations that preceded the 2001 license order for the FERC Mokelumne River Project #137, American Whitewater was satisfied with the recreational flows required for the Electra to Middle Bar reach. This was mainly due to the flows that Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) already released regularly during the day to generate energy for the power grid operated by the California Independent System Operator (Cal ISO). Boaters could take advantage of this dependable flow without the need to require recreational flows. However, over the past few years dependable boatable flows on the Mokelumne Electra run have all but disappeared.

Unforeseen at the time to the settlement participants, Cal ISO has now turned to solar and wind generation to fill the power grid pushing the normally reliable daytime hydropower flows to the shoulders – early evening into the night and early morning. As a result the Mokelumne Ecological Resource Committee (ERC) which includes American Whitewater, Foothill Conservancy, BLM and California Department of Fish & Wildlife along with the USFS started advocating to PG&E for a regular schedule of Electra recreational flows.

Now American Whitewater is happy to announce that PG&E agreed to 2016 summer flows every 1st and 3rd weekend of the month through Labor Day weekend. Big shout out to the PG&E Mokelumne crew for working diligently with the ERC to make this happen!
