Nannette Johnson is the bomb. No really. This was heard numerous times at the 2016 Gore Canyon Festival. This month, American Whitewater recognizes Nannette as our September Volunteer of the Month. Nannette was instrumental to this years GoreFest, working closely with our Colorado Stewardship Team to put on an amazing weekend of paddling, partying and raising support and awareness for the protection of flows in the Upper Colorado River.

Nannette not only volunteered the entire festival weekend, registering racers, organizing volunteers, directing shuttles, serving bbq dinner and just genrally bringing positive energy to everything she touched, she also created the beautiful, one of kind, GoreFest 2016 trophies. Without her we would not have been able to see a total of 153 kayakers, rafters, and SUP-boarders compete in races and freestyle events and 159 new and renewing members pledge to support AW and our stewardship efforts.

Nannette spends much of her free time volunteering: river clean ups, local ditch committee meetings, community gardens, and wherever else she feels most needed. She was born and raised in Atlanta, GA, but moved to Colorado 7 years ago to fulfill a lifelong dream of living in the mountains. She was a naturalist and teacher by profession, is a geologist by education, and is currently an artist and gardener by trade. She is constantly fighting to protect wild places as a member and volunteer for The Nature Conservancy, the World Wide Fund for Nature, and the Chattahoochee Nature Center.

In recognition of Nannette's efforts, she will receive a custom Kokatat X-Jacket, thanks to Kokatat's support of AW's Volunteer of the Month award.Thank You Nannette!
