OUTREACH MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION
April 2008

TITLE and JOB CLASS:   Outreach Manager, Regular Full-Time, Salaried
REPORTS TO:                  Executive Director


OVERVIEW:

The Outreach Manager is located in the Sylva, NC executive office and works closely with the Executive Director managing American Whitewater’s outreach, membership communications and event program. He/She will represent American Whitewater in a professional manner both in planning and execution of outreach, communications and events. The job involves extensive travel during the summer and fall. He/She must be very familiar with the whitewater industry, membership/business development and the mission of American Whitewater.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Outreach Manager is responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing outreach and membership events, advertising sales, media partnerships and sponsorships for American Whitewater.  Including the following:

Membership

  • Creates yearly membership plan for the organization including membership drives, event presence, and incentive programs
  • Assemble membership appeals and other bulk and electronic mailings including monthly e-newsletter


Stewardship Communications

  • Creates American Whitewater promotion and written materials as needed by organization
  • Responsible for maintenance of the AW website content including event postings, schedules and other pertinent information
  • Develops strong working relationship with key athlete representatives and manages the AW ambassador program
  • Developing external media contacts and materials for AW
  • Assists AW stewardship staff with projects including website postings, bulk emails, and press releases


Events

  • Provides leadership to AW river festivals; Wenatchee Festival, Deerfield Festival and Gauley Festival.  The position will be responsible for event execution and financial success.
  • Coordinates with paddling clubs to assist in the execution and the promotion of other events that benefit AW including: Potomac, NPFF, French Broad Festival, Upper Yough Festival, and Ohiopyle Falls
  • Organizes additional fundraising dinners or gatherings as opportunities occur


Magazine – AW Journal

  • Responsible for ensuring financial health of publication including advertising sales, printing, distribution and provide leadership to editorial and layout staff

 
Sponsorship

  • Builds relationships between American Whitewater and national corporate sponsors and promotes corporate philanthropy
  • Implements regional partner program with retailers, instructional schools and outfitters


ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS:
Entrepreneurial self-starter
Excellent communication skills (written, oral, presentation and electronic)
Basic graphics and design skills a plus
Membership database management a plus
Interpersonal communication skills
Effectively managing volunteers

EXPERIENCE:
Three or more years outdoor industry or non profit experience
Four-year college degree or equivalent experience
Experienced at multi-tasking and maintaining a long-term view
Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
Adobe Creative Suite software (Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign)
