An avid paddler, cyclist and skier, Singleton has over two decades of involvement in the marketing of outdoor activities and nature based tourism. From 1990 to 2003 Singleton led the marketing efforts of Nantahala Outdoor Center as Marketing Vice President. Mark possesses significant experience serving on government and industry boards. For seven years he represented the interests of outdoor recreation on the North Carolina Division of Travel and Tourism Board where he was instrumental in the development of cooperative advertising programs for the state. He is a past president of Smoky Mountain Host, a destination marketing organization for the western counties of North Carolina. Smoky Mountain Host implemented a Rural Tourism Grant Program in North Carolina, designed for long-term sustainable economic development. Mark has also served a three-year term on the board of the Outdoor Industry Association, where he represented the interests of specialty outdoor retailers.

Before joining NOC in 1990, Mark held positions within the ski industry, as Ski School Director at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia and Marketing Manager for Sunday River Resort in Maine. After completing a degree in outdoor education at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, Mark taught skiing and coached ski racing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Mount Hood, Oregon and Australia.

Mark and his wife Debby, a faculty member in the Parks and Recreation Management program at Western Carolina University, and their two daughters (Mckayla age 6 and Skyler age 8) live in Sylva, NC.
