My post from 7AM yesterday got lost. So here it is again:
Microsoft killed support for IE 5 (est. 1999 upd. 2000) about two years ago and many companies dropped support with it for all but basic operations on their website. The reasoning most companies is the increased support cost is outweighed by other alternatives. For example if you are still on IE5 you have other options (Firefox on a USB key if you can't install software for example: [
portableapps.com]).
We had no option but to follow suite (see below). To allow older browsers, as well as mobile phones, and other reduced-capacity devices, we opted to support a reduced-performance/mobile version of the site without a lot of extras here that works fine in IE5:

This site allows read-only access to the website and renders quite a bit faster on slower computers.
It turns out that when microsoft dropped support for IE5, so did everyone else and 30% of AW's site code is based on support from other companies. Since we only have one developer, we have to rely on using off-the-shelf components to support the site and reduce development time and complexity.
Additionally when Microsoft dropped IE5, It affected development on the site because it hindered testing as other pieces of the site lost support for IE5. In 2007, the rest of the site had to give in as well.
I'd encourage you to explore FF2 portable or FF1. You can also try the mobile site and see if that does it for you.
