What happened to river descriptions/photos while I was asleep?

Okay, I'm not finding an answer scanning the forums.

When I checked the river data base today I see that the photos and videos are all gone, as are the rapid descriptions. I realize that I've been asleep all winter, but what the heck happened?

Did you click on the tabs?

Did you wait long enough for the tabs to load? If you click on the Photos tab, you'll see photos and videos; if you click on the Rapids tab, you'll see the rapid descriptions.

The only "tabs" that I see are:
Our Organization
Support AW
Community
River Info
Library
Administrator

I searched these tabs and didn't find anything.

Click on a river/section

When you see the details for the river/section that you selected, you will see two rows of tabs just above the river/section name. The tabs start with "River Info" and end with "Gear, Guides and Services". Click on the "Photos" tab and you will see any photos for that river/section.

Let me add a couple of screen-shots (from a couple of random streams) of what I see:

One river page in FireFox:

http://www.americanwhitewater.org/~matt/NewYork/RiverPageFireFox.jpg

One river page in IE, with the user not logged in:

http://www.americanwhitewater.org/~matt/NewYork/RiverPageInternetExplorer.jpg

(Edited, so that the FF and IE descriptions point to the correct pictures, d'oh.)

Under the Navigation Bar headings (Our Org, Support AW, Community, River Info, Library, Admin), do you see the tabs (River Info, Flow Info, Rapids...)? Do you not see them in your browser? If not, what browser are you using? Could you email me a screenshot of what you do see (matt at americanwhitewater dot org)? If you're not seeing the tabs, that's a serious problem, and we need to get it fixed.

Those tabs are not appearing for me. I use Internet Explorer.

I am not even seeing the line ">River Select >NY State Rivers, etc." on my browser.

It goes straight from the line:

"Our Organization Support AW Community River Info Library Administrator"

to the river name with nothing in between.

The tabs are the last thing to load. Do you have a fast connection? How long are you waiting for them to load? What version of IE are you using?

As you see from the pics above, the tabs load in IE (version 6.0) for me. They should load just fine for you, too. We just need to figure out why they aren't loading for you.

My post from 7AM yesterday got lost. So here it is again:

Microsoft killed support for IE 5 (est. 1999 upd. 2000) about two years ago and many companies dropped support with it for all but basic operations on their website. The reasoning most companies is the increased support cost is outweighed by other alternatives. For example if you are still on IE5 you have other options (Firefox on a USB key if you can't install software for example: [portableapps.com]).

We had no option but to follow suite (see below). To allow older browsers, as well as mobile phones, and other reduced-capacity devices, we opted to support a reduced-performance/mobile version of the site without a lot of extras here that works fine in IE5:

This site allows read-only access to the website and renders quite a bit faster on slower computers.

It turns out that when microsoft dropped support for IE5, so did everyone else and 30% of AW's site code is based on support from other companies. Since we only have one developer, we have to rely on using off-the-shelf components to support the site and reduce development time and complexity.

Additionally when Microsoft dropped IE5, It affected development on the site because it hindered testing as other pieces of the site lost support for IE5. In 2007, the rest of the site had to give in as well.

I'd encourage you to explore FF2 portable or FF1. You can also try the mobile site and see if that does it for you.
