Hi AW members:

My name is Mike Barenti and I'm a Spokane, Washington-based writer. I just wanted to introduce myself (some of you might already know me) and let you know a little about my new book, Kayaking Alone: Nine Hundred Miles from Idaho's Mountains to the Pacific Ocean.

In 2001, I kayaked from Redfish Lake, in central Idaho, to the Pacific Ocean. The trip lasted 52 days. I self-supported in a whitewater kayak on Idaho's Salmon River, then used a sea kayak for the Snake and Columbia rivers. Obviously there's a lot of kayaking in Kayaking Alone -- nine hundred miles of it -- but the book is about more than just a long kayak trip. The river journey acts as a backbone that lets me examine the ecology and politics of the Columbia Basin. The book focuses on salmon and dams. (You can't write about one without writing about the other it seems)

My book is available at book stores, or you can order direct from the publisher at www.nebraskapress.unl.edu.

SYOTR,
Mike
