Watershed Watch Project Information

During our last BWA meeting, I discussed the Watershed Watch program and promised to post the link to the web page.

The Kentucky River Basin link would be the area for almost all of the central KY streams. The goal of the program is to monitor the water quality of the streams. By taking samples from mulitple locations in the watershed, you can more closely determine the source of a pollutant. If you are interested in volunteering, you would be required to do the following:
a) Attend a one day training class on water sampling
b) Take samples 4 times (first year only)
c) Take samples 2 times a year unless the levels of pollution are above the accepted level. If so, you will need to take another sample.

As of today, the calendar for next year's training schedule is not posted. I intend to volunteer and sample in the Glenn's Creek watershed. Each watershed has a person designated as the focal point, so if you have questions about a particular stream, let me know and I will pass along the contact information of the person(s) who respresent that stream.

If you have the time, I really urge you to think about volunteering. This is a great way to give something back to the streams that have given all of us a lot of enjoyment. From what i gathered from the meeting, the time commitment is minimal other than one Saturday for class.

I have updated information on the training schedule for water quality sampling. Ken Cooke informed me that the schedules are updated in Feburary and that there would be a training class held in Midway in April. I will post any updates as soon as they occur.

In case you need more of a reason to want to volunteer and monitor the waters we paddle, I have attached a link to a Washington Post article, that I received in an email, regarding pesticides in some U.S. streams.

The KRWW has an updated event schedule posted. Follow the link and look for KY River basin phase 1 workshop.

Remeber that 4/19/2008 is the date for the BWA Spring Clinic. However, there is a workshop on 4/5 in Lexington and one on 4/26 in Danville. These workshops are to prepare you to take water samples that are used to monitor stream water quality.

I will post registration information when that becomes available.
