Elkhorn Creek Cleanup Info and Signup

In April's BWA meeting, the Elkhorn Cleanup was announced. I have included some more information here. The cleanup will take place in two phases. I will provide adult beverages at the end of each phase.smileys with beer

Phase One: Consists of moving the junk from the cliffside to a location closer to the creek and securing it in case of a flood. I would like to have 4-5 volunteers for this. I am cautious to have a very large group due to the possiblilty of some of this junk rolling down the cliff.
Date: April 26 (weather permitting)
Time: 9:00 AM
Location: Meet at Elkhorn Acres Takeout

Equipment needed will be rope, pulleys (I have these), and appropriate clothing. Bring a lunch

Phase Two: Consists of taking the accumulated junk and ferrying it to the other side of the creek, then loading and hauling it away. I spoke with Mike Larimore last night and he has secured the landowners' permission for us to travel across their property to collect and haul the trash away. I would like to have 8-10 volunteers for this. Scrap metal will be taken to the Woodford Co. Recycling Center. The Franklin Co. Center is open on M-F only.

Equipment needed would be a raft or large john boat, tuck and trailer (I think I have this taken care of), and a rope long enough to use as a ferry line.

Bring your lunch and water.

Date: May 31 (weather permitting)
Time: 9:00 AM
Location: Meet at Elkhorn Acres Takeout

If you would like to volunteer for one or both phases please email me at kirkwoodea at yahoo dot com and indicate what phase(s) you would like to volunteer for. If you cannot attend but can loan me part of the equipment that would be a big help also. I really hope that you can volunteer to help out with this. This is a pretty stretch of the creek that has been trashed over the years. Of all the rivers and creeks BWA members have paddled, the Elkhorn is probably on all of our lists of streams that we have paddled. Many of us had our virgin run on this creek. Elkhorn Creek has provided, and will continue to provide, all of us with hours of enjoyment and I think we are indebted to it and this is a way to pay our debt.

Thanks for volunteering.

The number of people volunteering is slow, probably due to the clinic. I expect the numbers will pick up next week.

Count me in and let me know what tools of destruction i need to bring. Things that come to mind are 18v sawzall and grinder, ropes, leather gloves, pry bars. I would highly suggest a few pair of real thick leather gloves as that stuff is rusty and sharp as hell. Do we have hiking access to the area or were you planing on paddling in?

Brian,
I was planning on paddling in. Bring the tools that you list in your post and we can figure out what we need and how to get it in.

Thanks for volunteering! Greatly appreciated and glad to hear that you are recovering from the sinus infection. We missed seeing you at the clinic.

Volunteers:
First, I want to thank you for volunteering. Sandman brought up something that I forgot to list in the information post above. Everyone needs to bring a pair of leather gloves. I have a few pair at thome that I will also bring. These appliances are old and rusty and probably have some sharp edges. I highly suggest that you bring some clothes to work in instead of your paddling gear. Your gear cost too much to ruin. If you do not have a drybag to put your stuff in double bag them in garbage bags.

In addition to the adult beverages, I am also going to have a little something for us to eat, nothing fancy, probably sandwiches and chips.

Allen
