The girlfriend and I have been practicing on the Flatrock river in indiana and are looking forward to our first whitewater trip. We are planing to go down to the Elkhorn river this Saturday October 17th. We have recreational kayaks with touring skirts.

Being that this is our first trip down an unfarmiliar river I was wondering if anyone in the area wanted to come to. Maybe point us in the right direction, and give us a few pointers. We were planning on drinking a few at one of the distileries or at the bar after the trip, so I'd be happy to buy a few beers as payment.

My email is
ben.schwegman@yahoo.com so drop me a line if your going

I'm not asking anyone to make a special trip, but if your going to be there anyway we would like to tag along.

Thanks in advance,

FWIW, regarding "most USGS gauges (dare I say all) have the precipitation info for the gauges currently in use on the site.", that is a significant overstatement of fact.

In Wisconsin, for example, USGS maintains 219 'real time' river gauges. Of those, 198 have streamflow (cfs) conversion data, and 98 have precip data (so, about half).

For Georgia, the numbers are considerably better. A total of 281 gauges, 220 with Streamflow (CFS), and 224 with precip data.

So, it varies state to state. as to how many USGS gauges have rainfall data. FWIW.

Anyone have any more details on this? Looks like they want to build a reservoir on Shoal Creek (different that the Shoal Creek shown on this site) that feeds the Etowah River (Georgia) between Hwy 9 in Dawsonville and the Kelly Bridge takeout. They aren't building a dam on the Etowah, just a descent size creek that feeds it. Then they plan on piping the water to Atlanta (from the Coosa river basin to the Chattahochee river basin).

Click on the Menu item for River Info, National River database to look at the river database, national map. Click on the checkmark for gauges. I just tried to add a precipitation gauge to the Etowah 2) Hightower to US 19 reach, but it did not behave nicely, so I removed it.

That looked like the reach affected by the gauge linked above. It may take some time to work out bugs.

I am looking for other Grand Canyon enthusiasts to fill out a winter trip. My permit is for a 14 Dec 2009 launch. Planning to take out at
Diamond on Dec 31 (some flexibility on date/location). I have
some group gear, but would prefer to kayak with raft support. This

I am looking for other friendly folks who love the canyon.
Experienced boaters preferred, especially skilled rowers.
Will consider self-supported kayak trip as last resort.
I do not drink, but do not mind if you do in moderation. No

Thanks for the help! I emailed the LA Sierra Club River Touring Section and hopefully they will know what direction to send me in. Both my boat and the saddle are currently sitting collecting dust at a relatives house in Tahoe right now making me sad. I'll try to check out the Kernville Brewery on my next break from work if I haven't made any progress before then. It would be nice to meet some fellow open boaters out here.
Hello Jack,

I believe that ability is now built into our gauge database. You can list multiple gauges for a reach and they can be different kinds of measurements, such as precipitation. One hope is that we will be able to calculate virtual gauges based on precipitation as well as stream gauges.

Help us out. Tell us what precipitation gauges should be shown on what River Reach pages. Provide the names and provide links if you really want to be nice. Our gauge database has a lot of precipitation gauges in it, so we need to know the exact name to get the right one.

Once we know which gauges to put with with reaches, a local Stream Team member or one of us regional members can link up the gauges to see how they work.

Hello Nate,

Welcome to California. I don't know of any open boaters in Bakersfield area, but there might be. Ask up at the Kernville brewery or check with the Kern Valley river group. There are some links on the Kern river pages.

Larry Wade, from the LA area was a very strong open boater. Actually, now that I am thinking about it, look up the Los Angeles Sierra Club River Touring Section. There were a bunch of open boaters in that group. Go to the AW affiliates page and look up the California clubs. http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/Affiliate/view/
There are probably knowledgeable people in most of them.

In Fresno there are a couple of open boaters who might help. I would offer more help myself, but there is a saddle still sitting in my garage, that I have been meaning to put in my 17 foot Penobscot, so I can do more than class 2 with that boat.

I could send you some emails and phone numbers via private message, if you would like.

With the recent flash flooding issues in north Georgia (Etowah, Amicalola, Chattahoochee, etc), it would be helpful in predicting the water levels if we could easily see that info.

Hello!

I recently came to California from Virginia to work. I have an old Dagger Caper that was set up for solo or tandem but I converted it to solo only. Then my thigh straps/toe blocks broke (damn twenty year old outfitting) and I decided to upgrade to a saddle. That’s when I got my job in California and had to leave Virginia before I installed it and lost all of my help/instruction. I fear this project is beyond my knowledge and could use some help, suggestions, or even the number of an outfitter who could install it for me. I'm currently located outside of Bakersfield but willing to go anywhere in the state to get this done. I know there are not many open boaters out here (I stopped in Kernville and asked at an outfitter and they didn’t even know that people paddle canoes in whitewater) but any and all help is welcome.

Thanks,

It’s no surprise that businesses in the paddle sports space have been under tremendous financial stress in the last couple years. This session looks at industry trends and explores strategies that could help bring new growth to paddle sports.

The Whitewater Symposium seeks to advance the spirit of whitewater paddling through bringing leaders of the sport together. Our focus is on generating new ideas to support the future of whitewater among those who are genuinely passionate about it. Collectively, we have the greatest potential to influence its future.

The Whitewater Symposium program seeks to involve all those who actively love whitewater sport. This includes intermediate paddlers who want a deeper appreciation for paddlesport. Paddlers must negotiate the ‘Big Five’ on the Upper Gauley and the finish line is at a 12 foot drop called Sweet’s Falls. Over the years, this race has grown in notoriety and participation. The post-race awards party has become a popular event in itself. At the dinner, racers enjoy a buffet dinner, live music, prizes and a great party!

SO- C'mon paddle the Gauley like you mean it!

Black Canyon below Hoover dam is popular for canoeing. I don't think there are any rapids.

The Virgin river has several sections of whitewater, especially in the Virgin narrows. Check the AW river pages for Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/4518/

I think Las Vegas releases treated waste water into the Virgin on down into Lake Mead. Might be worth checking out.

It is fairly easy to get permits to float the Colorado River from Diamond Creek down into Lake Mead. You can find contact info on the AW Grand Canyon page.

With Lake Mead so low, there are rapids on the Colorado river in Iceberg Canyon, a few miles upstream of South Cove. Supposedly there is a good surf wave there.

I imagine the flat water paddling on Lake Mead could be pretty interesting.

There might be other paddling options available that locals know about.

Hi,

I use AW to look for river flows and to discover which nearby rivers are "in" at any given time... does anyone have any tips about a similar website that contains information about rivers in Canada? Specifically I am interested in the BC Rockies...

Thanks!

Well, here's the info from last year's Russell Fork Rendezvous. Looks like it was the last weekend in October, not the first--so it'll probably be late Oct again this year.
It used to be very informal, but it looks as though it's more structured these days than before. Still, you got music and the "Lord of the Fork" race. Looks pretty cool.

Will,
Go to Southern West Virginia.
September is Gauley Season!
The Gauley is one of the most popular rivers in the United States. Every September, regularly scheduled releases from the Summersville Dam mean a weekend of fun. There are two sections: the IV-V Upper Gauley, and the Class-IV Lower Gauley. (There's also the III+ Middle Gauley, between the two, but that's most commonly run by those who are running the Upper and Lower as the Gauley Marathon.)
The Gauley is the touchstone for the largest river festival in North America. Gauley Fest will take place this year from Sept. 18-20. It's a great party.
In that vicinity, if there's rain, you'll have a huge variety of other rivers to choose from. If it's a dry September, you'll still have the New River Gorge for variety. It has more flatwater than the Gauley, but it's still very cool.
I also recommend that you head three hours North of the Gauley to run the IV-V Upper Yough in Western Maryland, which runs on Fridays and Mondays. You can also hit up the III-IV Lower Yough, an hour North in Western Pennsylvania, which almost always has enough water due to dam control. There's a good chance you'll have enough water to run the Cheat Canyon,
If you stick around for October, you can head South for the Class-V Russell Fork at the Virginia-Kentucky border, or ten hours North for the IV-V Bottom Moose in New York. The Russell Fork Rendezvous is an informal party, which I believe is held the first weekend of October. Moose Fest is held October 17-19. (Bring your drytop; the Adirondacks get chilly in October.)

Hope this helps. Welcome to the US, and have a whole lot of fun on your trip!
