Due to an unfortunate incident, I had to take my sweet good dog Twinkles to the Paris Animal Welfare Society.

Twinkles attacked my other dog over some food and the other dog was injured. Twinkles is fine with most dogs, especially male dogs. It was my fault for having three female dogs at once.

Twinkles is obedience, agility, crate and house trained. She doesn't mind staying by herself over the weekend, is great with kids...I could go on and on.

She is about 5 years old, a Belgian Shepherd mix and about 70lbs. She is used to being kept indoors.

If you know anyone that might be interested, please let me know. She would even be great for a family or older person. I would gladly cover her adoption fee.

PAWS is a kill shelter. I took her there because that was in my contract when I adopted her.

I spent 3 winters in Syracuse. I did lots of XC skiing and indeed had a great time. Was fun to come home from work, go one block down the street to the park and XC ski under nothing but moonlight or city lights reflected by the low clouds ... very cool. Lot of miles of State Park trails within half hour of Syracuse. Conditions were frequently pretty decent there for XC. However, as now, I never went XC when I had a chance to snowboard .... simple reason, snowboarding is 10X more fun to me. I can't see driving hrs to XC instead of snowboarding. I still have my gear and have gone a couple of times at Veteran's Park after snows... but got so many scratches the last time I did that felt it wasn't worth it. Golf courses are the best places to XC in marginal snow, trying to stay over the grass ... if you can sneak on one without trouble.

I do miss XC. In Cleveland I used to hit the metroparks trails on a regular basis for an after-work workout. I havent done it here since the big snowstorm of 1998 when I XCed down the middle of Nicholasville rd right next to Fayette Mall with not a moving vehicle in sight. Hard to believe that could happen today.

I just wish the central KY climate allowed the snow to stay on the ground long enough to XC locally.

Then ask your winter fun doctor about CrossCountryXC! Get fast relief + more fun for your money!! Just say no to lift lines, crowds and parking hassles and yes to healthy, uncrowded, FREE* wilderness skiing - even in your own backyard!! CrossCountryXC is easy, cheap and fun for the entire family!

WARNING: XC skiing can be addictive and may cause unbounded winter exhilaration or seem like work if not taken as directed.

*A complete set of XC gear (skis, bindings, boots and poles) typically costs under $300 new or $100 used - not much more than the price of a weekend of downhill! Then once you get your gear the trails (like the rivers) are FREE!!!

Gotta put in a plug for Hawksnest.

Okay, so I know not many people here are going to travel south to North Carolina to go skiing/snowboarding, and with good reason. For the most part the conditions aren't as good and places like Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain are always crowded and pricey for what you get. However, if you ever find yourself down around Boone/Banner Elk on a cold day, go check out Hawksnest.

Hawksnest is situated close to Beech and Sugar but it's smaller with less hills and shorter slopes so it draws considerably less people. However, the hills there tend to be pretty steep, which also keeps a lot of the weekend traffic away, and the lift lines are short and it tends to be less expensive than the other two. Kind of a no-frills all-business ski hill.

I know nobody's likely to travel down that way for the snowsports anytime soon, but it's a good piece of knowledge to put in the back of your head. After all, you never know when a blizzard is going to come through NC that totally misses KY and WV. Look at the rain this summer.

Chris speaks the truth about school snow days at PN! We've spent of a few of those days with Jackie and her kids. If I'm not working Brit and I are there on snow days ... if we can get there anyway. More crowd than regular wkdays, but it's mostly kids and not as bad as wkends. Also true re: very cold days as half of the crowd will be in the lodge warming up at any given time leaving the hill to those of us with the proper gear. And it is true that the crowd thins on wkend evenings .... but in order to make such a short run worthwhile to me ... the lift line has to be very short, and that typically doesn't happen until pretty late on wkend nights.

We go to both Snowshoe and PN. I agree PN can be crowded on weekends but aim for big game days and the crowd thins out. I find PN peaks early afternoon and the thins out quickly come dinner time. Years of experience taught me that once the temps go below the low 20s folks stay home because its too cold for 'em. And the colder it gets the fewer that come. Catch a day in the single digits and you've got the place to yourself. Granted that doesnt happen often here but I saw it a lot in my salad days in New England. I once had a minus 80 day! Jackie Eggers reports that on school snow days PN is not busy so this year I will take the kids the next time they have a day off. PN is great for trying a new angle ( like learning to snowboard after years of skiing) or tuning up the kids for the first days of the season before a big trip out west or to Snowshoe. Why spend the first days of a big trip tired and sore when you can tune up at PN first a few weeks in advance? For a day trip there arent really any other options. I also found rollerblading at the arboretum the best preseason cross-training you can get. 4 sessions of that and I can ski bumps the first day out.

Chris Hellmann

Snowshoe is just the best skiing within a 500 mile radius. You wont see western powder but it can be halfway decent powder yet you still dont get the New England crud. It IS pricy in high season and I would hesitate to book a trip there way in advance due to the variable weather, mainly rain. The last couple years they have run some great specials early and late season , like 2 for 1, and that's when I go. Sign up for their e-newsletter. If I am going to make a big trip somewhere just myself or with my wife I would rather fly out to Utah for the best values. For a family wanting a big trip on a budget its hard to beat Snowshoe in late season. I never considered WP or Canaan because if I am going to justify the long drive, money, and time on a multi-day trip I want big vertical, coverage, decent snow and some double diamonds. For families its also hard to beat the convenience of lodging, food, and pools/hot tubs all together at the edge of the snow - minimal down time to take care of any kid issues. Getting lessons at Snowshoe can suck though since they never seem to have enough staff to do that so you have to book way in advance. For basic lessons PN is the place. I think they do so many its like a class every hour. Another reason to tune up there first.

Easy there big fella .... it's all over now ... slow deep breaths ;) It's always a compromise in the region we live in. I spent 3 days at WP and was never harrassed. It was spring conditions which means I was pretty much pointing the board down the hill on every run. Maybe I wasn't harassed b/c it wasn't crowded, but it was near end of season so maybe they didn't care anymore.

I agree the snow and terrain at Snowshow is the best in the region but the lodging / lift $ at Snowshoe is a joke for what they offer. You can do a cheaper trip to many vastly superior Western resorts with only the additional cost of airfare. But every year many brave that long slow road and show up there to pay those prices for mid Atlantic conditions and crowded to boot. Go figure.

Lets go bust some laps at PN one night.

That sounds fun, although in the east Snowshoe is the place. But no quick day trips there. I might be interested in doing some riding at PN when it gets non-boatable out.

Over the Xmas-NewYears week, we will be in the Smokies and I will be looking to paddle. Lots of stuff within a two hour radius - perfect for day trips.

A while back Clay mentioned getting a trip together for Jan. During Winter, especially nights / weekdays I'm making the drive a few times to Perfect North for some quick laps. I don't like wkend days there as the lines can be pretty long and slow for very little vertical. The only time PN is fun is when you can do fast laps back to back - off peak hours.

Depending on weather, Brit and I are boating New Years wkend or going to Winterplace, WV. Winterplace is pretty decent. The mtn is bigger and better than Perfect North, and since it's in the middle of nowhere, think the crowds will be less. I must say my only experience there was a warm wkend in March a few years ago, so that crowd thing remains to be seen. I will say it is far easier to get to and cheaper to stay at than Snowshoe. It's right off the interstate near Ghent, and there are tons of cheap rooms at nearby Beckley. Takes less than 4 hrs to get there.

If we like it there ... or we end up boating that NY wkend, we may also be going there MLK wkend. If some folks want to go to Canaan or Snowshoe ... we'll consider that option. But Ana may be going with us and either of those options would be a huge drive for her.

For those that love powder ... we're doing our Big Sky / Grand Targhee trip Feb 5-15th and would be great to have some company if anyone is interested. Big Sky 5-10th for my Wilderness Medicine conference, and then traveling to Grand Targhee on the 10th for the epic powder (500+ inches avg annual). Big Sky has joined up with Moonlight Basin to offer a huge amount of Terrain now (5500 acres combined). I like Big Sky cause I have lots of secret powder stashes in some glades there that I can find days after a snow and its very laid back and cool .... not the cute expensive stuffy ski town you'll find in most Western resorts. They only get 400+ inches at BS, but the vast terrain and cool atmosphere make it worth a visit. GT is even more laid back ... there essentially is no town at it's base, a couple of bars and some lodging and the terrain is not as big but the powder is world class, consistently voted among the best in North America year after year. Also it is much closer to the Tetons than J Hole so the view of them is pretty awesome. It's never crowded, so you will find pow days after a snow there too, and after that the hike access is very easy there to find the really secret stashes. A couple of years ago we stopped at Yellowstone on the way to GT for a Winter day tour there. That was very cool.

Thanks for all of the info!

Conklin's office told me over the phone that I'm not a candidate because I'm nearsighted.

My own eye doctor said that I am a candidate, and I found out that they do pre-screening stuff, so I've got an appointment with them, this afternoon, and will get further recommendations.

I would also recommend Conklin. I know him from the Y and as a patient. I would also recommend Dr. Jitander Dudee at medical vision group on nicholasville rd. by five guys burgers. He is the only one I have personal experience with his lasik procedures. A former fiancee had hers done, I got to watch while holding her hand through it all. She was a horse trainer and in a dusty environment all day everyday and was tired of contacts and dirt issues. She had better than 20/20 6months after the procedure and was back at work in 2 days in the barns (would have been earlier had the environment not been so harsh). He had a good repoire with his patients, friendly staff, and very thorough. He also did payment plans and he is very qualified (check out his credentials, very impressive). Just another option.
I saw Conklin a couple years ago for an eye infection. I agree he is very competent but was an intense, very busy guy, at least in his UK clinic office. Maybe its different in his Lasik practice which I got the impression was not at UK. We did talk about Lasik and he did make no bones that his fees were higher than you see others advertise. I havent pursued it to date as I am not yet willing to take the chance of being the one of the small percentage with a negative outcome.

Yeah, but there are tons and tons of laws on the books that are roundly ignored or underenforced and looking at the scope of them really highlights something about the nature of our concept of law enforcement and how it plays out in a real world environment.
