Nooksack Falls Hydro Project

The Nooksack Falls project has not been in operation since 1997, but plans to resurrect the project could have an impact on recreational opportunities. In summer 2002 the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission prepared a navigation report. The following information is adapted from that report along with additional information provided by local paddlers.

North Fork Nooksack Race: Important Information for Paddlers

The annual whitewater slalom race on the North Fork of the Nooksack takes place on a section of river that is closed seasonally for chinook salmon which are listed under the Endangered Species Act. A special use permit allows the race to take place, but paddlers should have an awareness for why this race is allowed and actions that must be taken to prevent impacts to nest sites.
