Description: Batavia dam may provide occasional winter paddling opportunities. However, paddlers should be aware of the hazard posed by ice shelves like the one shown here. Being swept into this risks the likelihood of flipping and being stuffed into the 'undercut' which it forms. Bear in mind that 4" of ice will support 1 ton! Just 2-3" will support a person. You will not be able to break the ice while in the water or in your boat!
