| Account | White Salmon just downstream of the pool below Condit Dam. Entering the Narrows of the White Salmon. With the exception of water that leaks through the aging Condit Dam, the Narrows of the White Salmon have been dewatered for nearly a century. This is one of the most scenic sections of the White Salmon River. This drop is the most challenging rapid on the run at the entrance to the Narrows. Steve lining up for the third pitch on the entrance drop into the Narrows. For the last couple years a log jam has been firmly lodged in the Narrows. At low flows it is relatively easy to portage. It may be a different story at higher flows as it is in a tight canyon with no convenient exit. Looking back upstream through the Narrows of the White Salmon below Condit Dam. This is the Powerhouse for PacifiCorp's powerhouse on the White Salmon River's Condit Hydroelectric project licensed by FERC as P-2342. This is the final rapid before the rivers settles in behind the Bonneville pool which backs up into the White Salmon. It is located below the powerhouse so you get plenty of water to run it. This pull-out on Hwy. 141, located 1.1 mile up river from the Columbia confluence, provides good river access along a fishermen's trail to the river. It's a steep hike up that takes about 15 minutes but it provides an alternative to paddling out to the Columbia on flatwater. |
