| Account | Gotta love boating with 450 of your closest friends. The lake paddle is about 3/4 mile. Its a great place to reflect on the day and collect the loose boats and paddles floating in the lake..... You'll know your about to reach God's Dam when you see the walking bridge. The Cheoah has plenty of warm up before the it throws the real stuff at you. Once you get through the fairly challenging entrance rapids, Bear Creek is easy to scout from the road. There are four lines normally run on this drop. Here are the creek line and the waterfall line. Once you get through the fairly challenging entrance rapids, Bear Creek is easy to scout from the road. There are four lines normally run on this drop. Here are the far right line and the waterfall line. Yard Sale is just below the bridge by Topaco Lodge. It sports a fairly sticky, almost river wide hole that can be run on the left or the right corner. Oh, did I mention the pushy cross currents that want to feed you into the meat? Oh, did I mention the pushy cross currents that want to feed you into the meat? Yard Sale is just below the bridge by Tapoco Lodge. Once you've punched the sticky hole, the rest is easy. The lake is just around the corner. One of the fastest growing moves on the Cheoah is "Hair Swimming". Here's a "former" boater practicing his technique in Bear Creek Entrance Rapid. The true aficionado, however, won't stop there; they will take on Bear Creek rapid itself! Playful shouts of "ROPE! ROPE!" or "OH, GOD SAVE ME!" are the mark of a true Hair Swimmer as he/she plummets over the falls or ping-pongs down the river right side of Bear Creek Rapid. Hurry up and get your technique down, the center creek line has yet to be bagged! Just imagine; you too could have a rock, undercut or sieve named after you! Bear Creek Entrance Rapid gives a lot of boaters the "willies". Mainly because a screw-up here could result in swimming Bear Creek Rapid. The entrance can be run almost anywhere. It just depends on how many rocks you want to bounce off of or holes you want to punch. Nice Shot! This photo represents most of what you'll find on the Cheoah. Wide open, multi-line rapids, with lots of gradient, lots of holes and almost no eddies. AND very pretty in spots. On the Cheoah, bridges seem to be a warning of something big just ahead. This is the Tapoco Lodge Bridge. Below it is Yard Sale. Consider yourself warned. Tapoco Lodge Rapid has several lines to choose from. You can go down river left, right (as pictured) or start center and then cut right. The safest way to see Yard Sale is from the bridge above. Need I say more? |
