Cascade Falls Triathlon, May 2-3, 2009
Special event sponsored by Kayak Adventures and Jackson Kayak. Click here for details.

For directions to the putin in downtown Penn Yan, click here.
Flow is determined by witnessing how many "Gates" are open at the Birkett Mills factory on Main Street.
1 Gate is not runnable other than some easy play at the put-in or at certain points at the Competition Center.
2 Gates is an intermediate run,
3 Gates will give you a class-III run from the put-in to the Competition Center and III/IV at the Center.
4 or 5 Gates gets very pushy and is not recommended for beginners.
The Competition Center begins with a Class-IV mill drop. Be on the alert for Strainers and signs warning of unrunnable waterfalls. When you see the signs, GET OUT! Follow Standard River rules when you come upon posted Hazards. Take out at the Hazard signs and safely portage or scout the hazard. Be particularly careful if there's a Special Event--please make sure that you don't blunder into an ongoing race or event.
The Competion Center is managed and maintained by Kayak Adventures and a huge team of volunteers. During Special Event releases, requested by Kayak Adventures or other entities, please contact them to determine the extent of their activity on the outlet. The Special Events postings can be found on the Keuka Lake Level website, maintained by the Keuka Lake Association.
You can reach the Kayak Adventures office at 585-704-2372 or kayakadv@rochester.rr.com if you wish to be part of the team that maintains the Outlet.

There are several putins, but the earliest is in Penn Yan. There's a small parking lot, with a short walk to the Outlet. There is a walking trail the entire 7+ miles of the outlet. Be on the lookout for people walking, riding bikes or on Horses if you find it necessary to be on the trail.
You can recognize this broken-down dam by the beat-up building on River Left. Get out when you see the Warning sign. The property owers understand the river passage laws and allow for safe passage around the falls. By permit the Falls are runnable during designated Special Events. Please take care and scout the Falls, as a Special Event may be taking place, and you don't want to blunder into the middle of a competition or instructional session.
