This reach is now being paddled by a few groups each year. For most groups it takes a day to hike over Bishop pass to the put in and then several days of paddling on the river.

Yesterday, John Grace and Tommy Hilleke became the first people to run California's Middle Kings River in one day. Their time to hike 11 miles over the 12,000-foot pass and then run 30 miles and 6,400 vertical feet of Class V water: 19 hours 53 minutes. We're impressed. Given that the Kings is in the same part of the world as Yosemite, one can't help but draw the comparison between this descent and freeing El Cap in a day.

Gauge Description:

Flows on the middle fork at the confluence with the south fork should be about half of that shown on the graph above. Flows at the beginning of the run, will be far less.

A general consensus seems to be that flows of 1100 to 1200 cfs at Rodgers Crossing are ideal to be starting the run, but that lower flows are better for the Bottom Nine miles to the confluence with the South Fork. Flows vary during the day and by changes in temperature, so boaters must be capable of dealing with a wide range of flows.
