Rt. 28 (South Fork) to Rattlesnake Creek

River Description

Not often runable, but a fun run if you can catch it up. Even at mega-high water, I would agree with the 2-3 class rapids with the usual small creek hazards.

I usualy put in on the South Fork, parking on route 28 a little west of Leesburg. (If the little wave under 28 looks surfable, its running.)

The Middle Fork dumps in a short paddle from the put in to add to the volume. From here to where Lees dumps in, its just alot of little play ledges and an easy 10 foot sloping drop that can be run anywhere (sideways or backwards for that matter).

Crossing under route 28 again brings you to the lower section of the run which is a little more in a canyon. The only rapid of any consequence lies in this section and only at high flows. The whole river drops 10 feet or so in a river wide sloping ledge. It's only a 30 degree drop or so but with enough water makes a huge hole at the bottom. (I've seen it stand a 12 foot oldtown straight up and hold it.)

Take out on Mcnroe Road or downstream on Centerfield Road, after it dumps into rattlesnake.
