River Description
Source: Greg and Sue Hanlon's
Steep Creeks of New
England, which has more info on this run.
Directions: From Skowhegan, take Rte. 201 North to Bingham. Turn left onto Rte. 16 West.
Just after crossing the Kennebec River, take your first right. Continue along the river-right
bank of the Kennebec to Wyman Lake. The road turns West away from the lake. Take the first right,
just after crossing Houston Brook, upstream of Houston Falls, and follow along the West shore of
the lake. As the road turns away from the lake, it follows the river-right bank of Carrying Place
Stream. Put in at the first bridge across the main stream.
To takeout: follow the logging orad back to a sandpit where the stream enters the lake.

the big drop has collapsed and is now a river-wide strainer. It's a nasty mess of logs and iron
cable. The collapse itself is not visible from the pool just above the rapid, but you can see the
remains of the top of the bridge, so just beware... Walk this one! ALSO Below the big drop, where
the river turns into a tight boogie section, there are quite a few trees down. The FIRST section of
that boogie section is good, BUT you've got to catch the first eddy you can on river right. There's
a nice strainer just around the bend, so you may want to take a peak. Other than all that, we had a
killer run at a mediium/high flow and would love to get back in there soon. Safe Paddlin - Colin
