Gauge Information
River Description
The provided lat/longitude coords are based on an 8-10-mile stretch of river from the road to the
bay.
Note from Access Director Jason Robertson:
I was visiting Kauai earlier this year and had the good fortune to spend a week on the Hanalei
River. The flow on this river is very rain dependent and at the time I was there, the river did
not have enough flow to go more than a mile upstream of the wildlife sanctuary which is at sea
level. According to the locals that I have spoken to, the river has been run in a sea kayak, but
the paddler had difficulty with one 6-foot ledge.
The brief whitewater segment of this river is only accessible from private
property, and is, therefore, not recommended, and not worth planning a kayaking trip
around. However, it is a beautiful place to go hiking.
The flatwater section downstream is also a beautiful place to go sea kayaking, and a great place to
see the island's native wildlife.
