River Description

A nice easy river in south central NH. Put in just below the Lower Suncook lake dam. The river is relatively narrow only about 40 feet wide. Look out for overhanging trees and strainers that force paddlers to pick their routes precisely.
The river starts out with easy class I/II rapids. These rapids continue past the old and then new route 28 bridges. After the campground along river right the river slackens to quikwater for approximately 1/2 mile. A sharp right hand corner marks the toughest rapid on this river section. Class II rapids start just above the route 126 bridge and continue 1/4 mile down to the Depot street bridge takeout. Takeout on river right above the bridge or river left below.

Gauge Information

Gauge Description:

Note: The gauge refered to in this section is a virtual "regional" gauge. It is in a nearby watershed but the proximity of the gauge and the river characteristics are similar. These gauges work best in the spring or wide area rain events. Do not rely on this gauge for localized rain events such as summertime thunderstorm activity. Current minimum run level for this stretch is still to be verified.

The Upper Suncook is a spring run river usually runable in March and April.
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services draws down Suncook Lake in the Fall and may bring the river up enough for a low water run. Drawdown of the lake would not be reflected on the above gage reading.
