Stoney Creek is not currently recommended. Please choose another of the area's fine
runs instead.
Stoney Creek drops through almost a mile (or more) of continuous small boulder gardens. The
eddies are small and logs or strainers are quite likely but the creek is worth it for the solid
class IV+ paddler. There are no tall drops and the whitewater is consistent class IV or
IV+.
This creek drains the slopes of the nearby ski resort. So despite having a small watershed, this creek benefits from the accumulated snow pack from the resort - at least December through March. Look for around 800 cfs or more in the nearby Rockfish River. Also, if a good warm rain falls on the snowpack uphill this creek can go, even if the Rockfish gauge doesn't look high enough. Of course, Stoney does run even without help from a snowpack, it just takes more rain.
