Gauge Description:

Flood of 2005

On October 9th, 2005 12” of rain overwhelmed the drainage capacity of the Cold. The result was the worst flooding in this region in over 50 years. The town of Alstead was devastated with several bridges and roads being washed out. Also nearly a dozen homes were destroyed and carried downstream. As of this writing (October 13th) there were still three people unaccounted for and presumed dead. For the time being boaters should stay away and allow rescue and recovery crews to continue their work. Even when this work is done boaters should realize the river bed may have had some drastic changes. Strainers will probably be a major problem for some time.

The first drop below the dam out of Vilas pool is a rather friendly-looking six-foot drop over a rocky ledge. Then levels to a Class II through to Drewsville Gorge, which is a V-VI stenotic twist, with a 12-ft drop in the middle, often jammed with logs. Permission is an issue portaging the gorge.
