River Description

If the reservoir is low, you have just paddled Big Creek upstream, you don't want to stop, and you actually like hiking your boat out of a deep hole, then this section is for you.   Richard Penny explored this section one year when he was living in Fresno and liked it enough to submit it to the AW database.  No one else believed him that it was worth bothering with, so the second descent is probably still waiting to be plucked.

Kidding aside, the rapids just below the Trimmers Springs Road bridge are impressive and exciting.   Most groups that paddle Big Creek do continue on a ways below the bridge.   Richard just paddled all the way to the river.

Take out:   The hike back up to the road from the confluence is really not that bad and not that far.  There is a turnout on the road and a dirt road/trail leading down towards the reservoir.   It is about a 15 minute hike carrying a kayak when the reservoir is at its lowest level.   Typically when this creek is running, you will hit lake before the confluence with the river, and so the hike will be shorter.

Put in:  You can park and launch at the bridge, but it is probably more convenient to park a bit upstream where the creek is closer to the road.  Most people of course will paddle this as an extension of the upstream section of Big Creek.   Elevation of the creek at the bridge is about 840 feet above sea level.

Gauge Description:

There is no gauge for this creek, but it tends to be runnable during and after heavy winter rain storms. If Mill Creek is above 100 cfs or so that might be a good sign. If Dinkey Creek is 500 or more during the winter rain season that would also be a good indication..

Look at dreamflows.com and look for a big difference between the Inflow to Pine Flat, and the Kings at Rogers Crossing. If the inflow is a lot higher than the sum of the flow at Roger's Crossing and for the N. Fork below Dinkey, then the creeks feeding directly into Pine Flat are running big. You can also look at Pine Flat Reservoir data and compare inflow to the Kings below the NF. Again, if inflow is alot more then Big Creek and the other small tributaries are running high.

There was a gauge on this stream in the past and there are historical records of daily flows for Gauge #11220000 from 1953 to 1973 as well as other water information for this creek.
