River Description

There are thee different stretchs in this section of river. The upper section, from the dam down to about the Alaskan Inn is a mellow class II section. The brush banks can make exit difficult for swimmer.

Below the Alaskan (a possible put in for the Canyon section), the action starts to pick up. At flows around 400 there are a number of class III rapids, one beaver dam that can be run, and a few logs to avoid. Below the Green bridge, the river tilts down hill and accelerates into a class IV continuous dash for the mouth of the canyon (in my opinion, this becomes class V at flows around 800 as there is virtually no way for a swimmer to escape the channel until after crossing under the road bridge.) The drops are very continuous but realtively clean. Wood is often an issue and in previous high water years has caused some very close calls for local paddlers. The good news is you can scout the entire thing from the trail on the north side of the river (cross over the foot bridge near the artificial waterfalls at the mouth of the canyon.) Take out at either to dirt pull out east of Rainbow Gardens, or continue to the Eccles Dinosaur Park.

Below Rainbow Gardens, the river eases to class III with more brush lined banks. There are numerous take out options. My prefered location is at Lorin Farr Park just off of Monroe Ave (there's a nice play wave at flows above about 350 underneath the Gramercy Ave bridge.) I am told below here that there is a foot bridge, which is difficult to ge under at higher flows.

Gauge

Gauge Description:

The flows can change very suddenly during the runoff season as Webere Basin and the BOR respond to inflow forecasts. Check the hour before heading to the river. The run can be scraped down at ~200. 300 is a good target to avoid excessive rock contact. Flows higher than 1200 are possible but really meaty.

I drove by this the other day and it looked very runnable. At 650cfs, there was plenty of water, but it doesn't look much worse at 1000. My guess is that somewhere around 400 - 500 is minimal.
