River Description

SEASON: Winter rain storms.

ACCESS: About a mile north of Forks, Forest Road 29 leaves highway 101 at mile 193.3 and heads east. The put-in is 5.4 miles up this road at Klahanie Campground. Those who want to extend the run can put in as high as the Hyas Creek confluence with the South Fork (FR 29 mile 8.0) although there is no significant whitewater between here and Klahanie Campground. To reach the take-out return to Highway 101 mile 193.1 (south of FR 29 turn-off) and take the road west to La Push. Drive 5.5 miles toward La Push and the fishing access on river right. There are several alternative access points along FR 29. You can obtain current road information from the USFS Pacific Ranger District in Forks (360)374-6522.

DESCRIPTION:

Class II-III run with boulder gardens that can be fun with good moderate water. The run is less enjoyable at low water levels.

Gauge

Gauge Description:

The Calwah now has a realtime gauge. Flows are approximate based on only a couple of data points. You can likely get down the river at slightly lower flows and high water runs are certainly possible. You can get a good visual on flows by driving the shuttle road.
