River Description

This is a great run that has many different personalities. Starting at Rt. 50, the stream picks up quickly, heading into continuous boulder filled rapids. It drops around 100 feet in the first mile. Many of the drops are obstructed and there is a lot of manuevering required (very comparable to the Stony River nearby). It is always a good idea to be on the lookout for strainers in this part.

After a mile, the creek lets up and flows along at a slow pace for a little while. After a mile or two of slow water, the creek picks up to Class 2 with occassional Class 3. It remains this way all the way to the North Branch. The rapids pick up a little as you approach the North Branch. There is a really fun slide just upstream of the confluence.

Gauge

Gauge Description:

The Stony River is very nearby and so Abrams should have enough water if there is around 400 cfs in the Stony. If the Kitzmiller gauge on the North Branch of the Potomac is over 5.5 feet and rising, there is a good chance of catching Abrams.

Ran Abram's on May 10th,2008. Guide book states the 1st mile is comparable to the upper Yough. No way! Class 3 plus at best. Only "difficulty " is being aware of trees blocking the stream. Takes a lot of water to make it go, the stony was at 800 cfs mikebeswick@alldredgewildernessjourney.com Edit
