Cty 1 to Hwy 61 (4.3 miles)Class IV-V+
4.3 Miles
Avg Gradient 132 fpm
Max Gradient 300 fpm
River DescriptionFirst three miles is easier access paddle (with brush-bashing), on a meandering stream in willow-thicket upland marsh-like area. (It may be possible to access the head of the real gradient via Fredenberg Creek. This would shorten the trip to 1.36 miles, with 460 feet of drop!).A (potentially runnable) slide of approximately 70' is most awesome. Also impressive are three other big falls which generally occur as the river dives into culverts under various switch-backs of the railroad (serving the taconite plant at the lake). At least two of these have been run, but most boaters will choose to portage. Most boaters will end their trip above Hwy.61. There are more rapids and falls between there and the lake, but to run them means one must carry back to the highway by trespassing, climbing up and down a high, steep embankment for the railroad (covered in loose skree) right before the river enters the lake (bay).
