River Description

This section is technically known as Section 1 of the Chattooga by the Forest Service. Most boaters refer to this section as the West Fork and refer to the Section of the East Fork of the Chattooga as Sections 1, 0, and 00.

The putin is below the Overflow Road Bridge and the takeout is the Highway 28 Access (putin for Section 2) on the main stem of the Chattooga about 1 mile below the confluence on river left.

On March 14, 2001 The Tallulah Ranger District issued a public memo to Interested Person regarding the future management of the "Nicholson Tract". The "Nicholas Tract" is the newly acquired land on the West Fork that was at the center of the West Fork access controversy over the last few years.

One of the uses being considered for the Nicholson Tract is a horse camp. This is a potentially serious impact to the river water quality. If you are interested in knowing more about the propose management ideas please contact David Jensen, District Ranger, Tallulah Ranger District, 809 Highway 441 South, Clayton GA 30525 (706)782-3320

There is a tree completely blocking the river about midway between the Overflow Rd put in and Warwoman Bridge. Look for a nice beach on the left after a hard left turn. There is a portage around it, walk up the stairs from the beach to an old building foundation, find the logging road that follows the river. After the big red clay bank there is a way down back to the river.

The Tallulah District has made a decision regarding the management of the Nicholson Tract. There will be no Horse Camp. We should update the river page. If you want more information contact me.
