River DescriptionPlay Spot Description:You can expect 20-30 minute rides in a killer wave just below Five Mile Dam if the water is over 250cfs. This is a great but little known park and play spot. The wave washes off a wide rock chute and spans the entire width of the river. The chute keeps the water 4-6 inches deep and drops to 4-6 feet during the recommended flow. When the flow is between 250 and 400 it is a good beginner wave. When the flow is above 400 the wave takes on a different dynamic. The sweet spot will have you swaping ends in continuous cartwheels until you're dizzy. If you're not comfortable going vertical it is best to paddle when the flow is under 400 cfs. Play Spot Hazards: There are no protuding obsticles during recommended flow. However, directly below the wave on river right, the bank is very steep and forms a short wall. The fast current is channeled by this wall and creates a pin hazard. When the water exceeds the recommended flow the wave becomes a deep and very sticky hole. The water gets up into the bank brush, creating some nasty strainers. Play Spot and Take-Out Directions: Take I-35 South to Exit 210 or Yarrington Road. Turn right on Yarrington and drive until it Ts 1/4 mile down. Turn left on Post and drive about a mile until it forks. Do not cross the river, turn right onto Old Stage Coach Road and drive it 1/2 mile to the FREE County Park on your left. Park near the dam and you'll see the wave just down river. The County Park is a good take-out spot if you're running the river from Wimberley. Special Note: After a good rain somtimes the County Park is closed. In this case there is no parking near the wave. In this case, I usually drop my boat at the park and drive back to the low water crossing where there is a turn-out. A Hays County Sheriff once told me it was legal to park there. Make the 1/2 mile jog back to your boat and enjoy the wave in complete solitude. When you've had enough simply float down to the low water crossing and retrive your vehicle. I got the chance to run the blanco river from wimberly to kyle at about 700cfs. It was one of the best trips I've taken thats around central texas. Water is so blue and green that you think its a dream. Plus not to forget the land that surrounds the river. Got in at 10:30 from wimberly Cty Rd 1492 and got out at 7:15 at kyle, near the park.
