River Description

Jolyon Rivoir-Pruszinski recommends that boaters park at the Vermont Fish and Game area and carry up to the putin if possible. it's a short walk and you won't be on private land.

4 major drops plus stuff in between:
1. Drop under bridge (IV).
2. Next drop tougher (IV).
3. Technical III-IV for a few hundred yards after, then short backwater above a class V waterfall. Do not run unless you are confident that you can land out beyond the rock in the crease on river left. Warning: even succesful runs of this drop have resulted in compressed spines and dislocated shoulders. Unsuccesful runs have resulted in seriously damaged equipment. The gauge is in the backwater to this drop. Below the waterfall is a good splat spot on river right.
4. A couple hundred yards of II-III lead to the class-III entrance to the final big drop (IV+). This final drop can be run RR or RL. The RR line is very straightforward but there is a pinning rock on the right hand side in the middle of the chute. The RL line is a deceptive scout. Few have run it succesfully on the first try.
If you do run it, hug the boulder in the center of the river around which the river splits and then once past this section either dart left to a microeddy above the final slide or head right down the slide.

Gauge

Gauge Description:

Jolyon Rivoir-Pruszinski comments: "It's actually runnable down to 100 cfs and definitely worthwhile, as the bedrock funnels the flow nicely."

This stretch becomes solid IV-V at higher levels (i.e. above 500 or so).

When I boated the wells on july 19 there was a huge log in the RR line on the second drop against the rock wall, I just leaned into the log and was ok, the drop is still runnable but the log could move and make the RRline sketchier than it was for me with the log in it, I would advise scouting or going for the alternate middle line on the second drop if you know it. Also there is a river wide tree in the bend right before the waterfall. The best way to get around this tree I found was all the way to the right through a gap between the end of the tree that is about a boat length away from a rock. This was all at a level of 170cfs more or less water may cause these hazards to shift, and at higher waters the tree in the river before the waterfall might not be passable or perhaps will be easier to pass I'm not sure, so please use caution if you are going to the wells, it would also be wise to scout all the drops for wood as a precaution. -Toth Edit

Norm StauntonDetails
5-7-2006: Strainer Warning

There is a big stump/ root ball in the Final Drop in the river left line just above the slide near the river left eddy. It is avoidable by driving towards the center once you are through the holes above the slide. However, it will hold a person or boat, as we learned today, if you don't miss it. Everyone came out okay, and plans are in the works to pull it out, but it is there now.
