River Description

This is a short, frolicking run that is very popular on the weekends. Here the gradient averages 13 feet per mile and the paddler will find rocky shoals (up to Class II+), quiet pools and rugged bluffs. A favorite with whitewater enthusiasts, "surfing" is possible at higher water levels.

The put-in is at Pinnacle Springs Campground, one of three public access sites developed by Cadron Creek Outfitters and is near Pinnacle Springs, a flourishing resort community in the 1880's. A dozen bath houses were found in this town, along with two hotels, a college, a saloon, a skating rink, and even a cotton gin.

There are inspiring views at Pinnacle Point Gap and Owl's Home Bluff and Bear's Cave are popular attractions. This section has a number of shoals (Right Back At Ya, Daddy's Knee, etc) that require good boat control. One rapid in particular, Cathedral Shoals, is Class III at optimum levels (> 4.5 feet). The rapid is steep and requires maneuvering to avoid large rocks lying in the middle of the channel.

This is an excellent winter run with many large ice formations on the bluffs in the colder days of the year.

Rapid Summary

Mile Rapid Name Class Features (Legend)
0.0Sarah's WaveIIPlayspot

Rapid Descriptions

Sarah's Wave (Class II, Mile 0.0)
You can spend an entire afternoon in this nice playhole right at the put-in. The wave is at its prime at water levels of 3.2 to 3.8 feet. The wave is 4-6 feet wide and stands 1-2 feet along its length. Entry is easiest from river left (or on the right hand bank when approaching it from below). Move upstream in the eddy near the small island and then ferry straight into the hole. From there you can play the main wave or peel out or draw yourself into smaller waves lateral to the main wave. Recovery is easy on either shore below this short rapid and the nearby picnic area offers one a nice place to sit and rest. Just upstream there is an excellent swimming hole with large boulders to lie upon and sun bath.
