River Description
The only white water on this great little section of river is actually the remains of a busted
hydro dam on the edge of Ft. Bragg. There is another dam that is intact which is a mandantory
portage (on the left, preferably). Do NOT run the tailrace of this dam due to strainers which are
usually hidden in the froth. Several drownings have occurred here, all swimmers as far as is
known.
The putin on river right is semi-isolated, but no problems are known with vehicle tampering thus
far.
The takeout is a metal temp-type bridge put into place by the US Army. Takeout on either side of
river here, preference to the river left just past bridge. Do not block the roadway at the takeout
as this is a place to park solely at the discretion of the government and we would hate to lose
this jewel of black water, yet fast current, paddling.
This is a very 'under-paddled' river due to few even knowing about it. Nestled along the county
lines of three counties and the sprawling military reservation, it is a great place to paddle with
beginners and those looking for soilitude. As with small waterways, it is subject to treefalls, but
last time paddled there was only one such mandatory portage. Several beautiful sandbars for lunches
make this one trip to make especially when other rivers are too dry to paddle.
