2. Drake to Canyon Mouth III-IV
River DescriptionThe Big Thompson seldom has good flow (>400 cfs) but when this creek is pumping be ready for a great ride. Most people put in below Idyllwilde Dam, but you can put in up near Drake. Just be aware the dam is a killer. The run is steepest and most difficult near the top.Less than 1 mile into the run you encounter a dangerous culvert at Viestenz Smith Mountain Park. Look at this before you boat the river. The creek passes some houses in Cedar Grove and then hits the Narrows where the river is pinned between the road and a canyon wall. There is another portage at Tunnel #1 Diversion Dam downstream. The Shuttle is simple as this run is all along Highway 34. StreamTeam Status: unverified
