River Description

Cove Creek is an intimate little stream that is often used when nearby Cadron Creek is in flood (>6 feet). The put-in is at the base of Round Mountain and is easily reached from the bridge just west of Martinville on Highway 124. The first mile of the run may be a bit boney but Cedar (river left) and Batesville Creek (river left)will enter and add to the flow. Thereafter the creek enters a deep gorge and winds around Cove Mountain. High bluffs shelter several nice Class II shoals and playholes and although the road (Highway 285) is high overhead it is out of sight and can't be heard--all you experience is wilderness. As the stream approaches Cadron Creek and leaves the gorge it passes the Cove Creek Natural Heritage Area where primitive camping is available on river right. Cove Creek then enters Cadron Creek--from here you can paddle downstream pass a waterfall plunging directly into Cadron Creek. Soon thereafter you'll see the Mallet Town bridge; however, the best take out is just opposite the waterfall where a gentle but muddy embankment leads to road running alongside a corn field. This is private--but unposted--property. Be discrete and leave no trash or evidence of your presence. For additional information, shuttle and canoe/kayak rental please contact Cadron Creek Outfitters (www.CadronCreekOutfitters.com, 501-679-5050).
