River Description

Put In: Jordan Camp
Take Out: Road 208
Map: Forest Service Visitors Map - Idaho Panhandle National Forest - Coeur d'Alene National Forest

Overview:
This is the roadless section of the North Fork of the Couer d' Alene River. Most people do not realize that North Fork has a roadless section, including many of those who have spent significant time in the area. This is probably due to the common misconception that the North Fork follows the main Big North Fork Road from Kingston all the way to Magee Ranger Station. Take a look at the map, and you'll notice that at the confluence of Teepee Creek and the North Fork, the road (FR208), follows Teepee Creek west, and the North Fork is tucked into a narrow canyon to the north.

I've heard that this section just missed out on Wild and Scenic designation, although I haven't verified it yet. It is eligible for Wild and Scenic classification under the Nationwide Rivers Inventory, maintained by the National Park Service, and it certainly deserves some protection. The entire North Fork drainage has been butchered by clearcut logging over the last 120 years, only the canyon and the uppermost tributaries are still wild and intact. Come check this river out, it needs more friends. Note that fishermen may be hostile towards boaters on this section, but you’re unlikely to encounter any while the river is at a runnable level.

The Run:
The run is a class II-III, swiftwater, creek run suitable for beginnner / intermediate kayakers and open boaters. Hazards include logs and brushy banks. Scenic highlights include Cathedral Rock, where the river passes by the base of a vertical wall several hundred feet high. Perched at the top of the wall are two house sized boulders balanced atop thin rock spires. This is also where you'll find the first rapid of any consequence, the second is near the takeout where the river makes a sharp turn right hand turn against a vertical wall. There are several braided sections in between that can make the run scrapy at low flows.

Trip Logistics:
To get to the river exit off Interstate 90 at Kingston and drive North on the Big North Fork Road about 40-50 miles (I still need to calculate the precise distance). The road becomes number 208 at the "town" of Prichard, which is located at the confluence of Prichard Creek. Continue up river and stop at the third bridge AFTER the Big Hank Forest Service Camp Ground. This is the TAKE OUT. There is a small parking area near the trail head of trail 20. Alternatively, you can take out any where downstream from Teepee Creek to extend the run.

To get to the PUT IN continue on road 208 which heads west. It becomes road 6310 and eventually changes from pavement to dirt. Watch for road 3099 heading up hill to the north. Take 3099 north to road 412 (turn right at the fork). Take 412 to Jordan camp. Before your trip call the Forest Service to make sure that roads 3099 and 412 are open. For best results keep an up to date map handy and check your position frequently.

Camping:
The North Fork can get quite busy in the summer months so plan in advance. See link to Forest Service camping guide with interactive map below. There are also nice undeveloped sites off the main river.

Side Trips:
Side trips in this area include the ghost town of Murray, home of the infamous ladies of evening Molly B'damned and Terrible Edith. At the town of Enaville (a few miles above Kinsgston) The Snake Pit is a good place to get a bite to eat or a beer on the way up or down the river.

Gauge

Gauge Description:

The closest online gauge is just above the confluence with Shoshone Creek (near Pritchard). Unfortunately, the gauge is below the confluence with Teepee Creek, which is nearly equal in volume to the North Fork. For the best indication of level on the North Fork check under the take out bridge. There is no stick gauge here, but look for it to be running bank full. From the hydrograph, peak run off is early May.
