River Description

Note: This creek is also refered to in some publications as "Galloway" Creek.

Calloway Creek was first run in 2002, and boasts numerous non-stop steep, vertical and chaotic class IV slide-style rapids through a spectacular high walled canyon. There are 2 swinging fences that alert paddlers may be able to pass under (depending upon flow levels) and (at this writing, 03.20.03) 2 river wide tree strainers that should be portaged.

First time paddlers of Calloway should posess good boat scouting skills or be following a Calloway veteran as there are numerous horizion lines with poor bank scouting possibilities.

Put-in is the at the small bridge across the Smith Fork tributary on Durbin Rd. accessed from I-75 exit 97.
Take-out is off US 25 directly under the I-75 bridge over the Kentucky River. The mouth of Calloway enters the KY River directly across from the mouth of Boone Creek.

Gauge Description:

There is a flat rock (almost shelf) that is directly across the main stem and about 10' on river right downstream from the confluence of it and Smith Fork. It is low but runnable if that rock is barely covered - it will be a little scrapy at the top and bottom but good in the gorge.

calloway can be run really low. my buddy dagger dave and I once went there and he would not take no for an answer even though I thought it was way too low way way way too low like 50? cfs. the first half mile was a bad scrapper, real bad and I was real pissed off to be beating the hell out of my boat. there are two cattle gate fences that come up and are easly avoided, after the second gate the creek gets so steep that almost no water is required. steep blind turns log flume style banks appear so tight, like 2-3 feet wide, that 50 cfs is enough to float through the trough. I would not want to be here at really high water plain and simple. Take this creek seriously. Edit
