River Description

This is a great Class IV creek type run. The first 1.3 miles from Mill Creek Falls to North Fork/Prospect powerhouse contains 10 to 15 Class IV drops. Below the powerhouse the Rogue eases off to Class III but the powerhouse adds an additional 1000 cfs. This Class III section is approximately 2 miles in length. For the more adventurous, you can tackle the Avenue of the Giant Boulders above the confluence of Mill Creek Falls. This Class V is sure to keep you busy. Above that is the Class V+ Prospect Falls viewable from the Mill Creek drive bridge. Visit Ashland Mine Productions for video footage of this reach.

The heart of this reach is dewatered by PacifiCorps Prospect Hydropower Project. American Whitewater is working to restore whitewater opportunities and real-time flow information.

Shuttle: Road Map

To get to the take-out: Go north on Oregon State Highway 62 East [sic] past Lost Creek Lake. At 'The Gorge' store and gas pumps turn right onto Mill Creek Drive. Go up Mill Creek Drive 1.7 miles to an old road turned trail on the right. The trail leads to the river/lake. There is a small wooden pedestrian bridge over Shookcum Creek for recognition at the take-out.

To get to the put-in: Continue up Mill Creek Drive 3.5 miles. Park at the trailhead for Mill Creek Falls viewpoint. Follow the trail to Mill Creek Falls and hunt for a trail to the river. For the adventurous, go left from the trailhead to Avenue of the Giant Boulders.
