River Description

There are two sections of rapids on this run. The stream is created from the spill way of a small lake. The main drop from the lake is not runable, but the second drop is ok. On the river right after the spill way is a good class III drop.

After the first drop it is flat water for a good .45 miles and then a long class two shoal. If there is not ALOT of water on this shoal it will be very scrapey.

Big Sandy Creek is in a state park. There are some keep off signs next to the first drops. I don't think they would mind if someone were to kayak the bottom shoal, but the top is another story. If you are going to run the top drops, I would advise a quick run.

Directions: From Jackson, take HWY 23 southeast out of town. Right after 23 becomes four lanes take HWY 42 south (it is a right turn). Follow 42 until you cross Big Sandy Creek. The park entrance is on your right just after the creek.

There are a few Keep Out signs at the top of Big Sandy Creek. The ranger's office is just on the other side of the parking lot.

The first rapid is the best drop. It is located just below the lake. The main drop of the spill way is not runable, but the second is clean. Just after the spill way, on the river right, is a fun drop. At low water it is hard to get a boof. This can cause a minor pin at the bottom. The best run would be to boof and turn to the right.

Take-out Shoals (Class II, Mile 0.5)
When the bridge comes into view, the last drop is just ahead. It is a very easy class I or II shoal. It is long and slow with many lines. Just take the line that has the most water. If it were to rain very hard, making the level very high, this shoal would probubly be fun.
